Emmy Poll!

So, Emmy nominations were announced today. And since I very rarely care about the actual nominations, which are weird and sometimes random but far too often just plain bad, I've made my own poll, in which we will consider some VERY important and overlooked categories.

Poll #13905 Emmy Poll

We've got a snow day here in DC! \o/ Even though there's no actual snow. We were supposed to get a foot. If I didn't have the day off, I might be very disappointed in you, weather people.

* Following up on yesterday's Catching Fire posters, we now have Katniss, Haymitch, and Cinna as well. I wonder if that's the mockingjay/wedding dress Katniss is wearing.

* Lots of Community tidbits from the PaleyFest panel, plus the study group as puppets.

* Pics from the upcoming (half) season of Doctor Who, featuring the new companion.

* I've linked things like this before, but here's another set of nifty floorplans for a bunch of pop culture homes.

* Also, this article made me nostalgic for Buffy's secondary character episodes, so have a poll!

* Most interesting read of the day is this in-depth analysis of how Smash became a hate-watchable trainwreck. A lot of it boils down to "it was all Theresa Rebeck's fault," but it's really eye-opening to read about the conflict happening behind the scenes. Which... kind of makes me hopeful? I really wanted to love this show. Unironically. Broadway + TV is basically my two favorite things combined, how could I not love it? AND YET. But I've watched the first hour of the premiere (it's available online) and it definitely seems to be course-correcting. There's still some awkward remnants of last season, but I figure it's a bit like trying to pull a U-turn in the Titanic, so I'm willing to wait and see what happens.

* Also, JEREMY JORDAN. Even if Smash were still S1-level terrible, I'd probably still be watching for his role in S2.

* Julie Benz talks about her upcoming Syfy show, Defiance.

* EW interview with Julie Plec touches on TVD (of course), Dawson's Creek, and her partnership with Kevin Williamson.

Also, here is my thread for [personal profile] staranise's love meme:

Once someone has a comment thread about them, leave a comment and tell them about something they've done or made that you liked. A kind word, a signalboost, a drawing, a story. This can be short or long. You can just name or link to something, or go into more detail.

And finally, a TV poll:

I did this last year, and I thought it'd be fun to play again. How does it work? Basically, I pick my totally biased top six in each category, and y'all vote for your favorites.

Netflix and I are breaking up, so I've been spending my free time lately watching/rewatching Farscape on Amazon streaming. This SHOOOOOOW. I just finished season 2 last night, and I am 99% sure I haven't seen anything after that, but I'm kinda spoiled on general stuff. I don't recall being such a diehard John/Aeryn shipper the first time around, but GOD THEY GET TO ME. Anyway, I may have more rational thoughts later, but for now, fun Farscape-inspired poll!

Blerg, I think I'm getting a cold. This is probably my immune system rebelling against the new health insurance nonsense.

It's also a Thursday and I'm bored, so I'm gonna copy [livejournal.com profile] penny_lane_42 and do a poll!

If you've been following my renovation picspams, you may have noticed that I have a divided bathroom - a washroom with the sink and the linen closet, and then the toilet and bathtub in a separate room. My bedroom opens into the washroom as well, which means there are a lot of doors in one small space. I would like to get rid of one of them, preferably the door from the living room to the washroom. Obviously the bath/toilet needs a door for privacy, and I'd like to keep my bedroom door. Besides which, the washroom door is really in the way when it's open, and it's awkward to get around.

Earlier tonight, I saw [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle's post about "The Gift," which put me in the mood for late S5 Buffy, and I ended up watching "Checkpoint," "Crush," "Intervention," and "The Gift." And at first I was all, "Wooo! Buffy pwning the Council!" Then "Wooo! Everybody pwning Spike!" Then "Wooo! Buffybot and Spike's sexy bedhead!" But then Buffy died again (every time! OMG) and now I'm all sad.

So! Let's have a completely frivolous poll!

Quite a while back, [livejournal.com profile] snickfic posted about her season 1 rewatch, and there was talk about "The Pack" being the first really effective episode of the series. And that got me to thinking.

It seems pretty generally accepted that season 1 is in a different category than the rest of BtVS - Buffy with training wheels, almost. It doesn't get much fandom love. Full series rewatches usually begin with a grumble about slogging through season 1 in order to get to the good stuff. I've even heard plenty of people suggest NOT starting at the beginning in order to get new viewers hooked on Buffy, or at the very least, assuring people, "Just keep watching! It gets much better, I promise." It's shorter, it's campier, the metaphors are really anvilicious, the monsters are really cheesy (okay, that doesn't totally change), and it features less of the long-term arcs and emotional character moments that become the touchstone of the show.

But where, exactly, does the "real" BtVS begin? What's the first episode that makes you sit up and say, "THAT'S the show I know and love!"

I've heard it said many times - both seriously and facetiously - that season seven was just one long audition for "the next Buffy." That they threw in all those Potentials hoping one of them would be popular enough to become the star of her own show. So... which one would you watch?[Poll #1392368]
