A Sinking Ship

Happy New Year! I had a lovely holiday, but alas, I come with bad news for those of you (basically just [personal profile] ever_neutral) who were dedicated shippers of my cat, Chelsea, and her nemesis-turned-boyfriend, Clinton.

Chelsea had an extended vacation at my parents' house this year, and that ship went down in FLAMES. Apparently, it was a relationship that worked better long distance.

But at least Chelsea got to look pretty for Christmas, right?

Fucking Photobucket

Motherfucker, do you have any idea how much fucking WORK it would be to move all of my literally thousands of icons to another site and then go back and update all the links on over 100 posts - to say nothing of the icons I posted to challenge comms, my picspams, the gifs I've used all over the internet, mood themes, my custom LJ layout, etc.?

I am not paying fucking $400/year just to save it, though, so brb, mourning all the fucking hours spent on graphics no one will ever see again.

The obligatory "I'm not dead" post

I have not been keeping up with the internets very well. I will be back to your regularly scheduled linkspams soon enough.

Good news: I went to Key West for four days. It was gloriously sunny and beautiful and I didn't even mind that I was technically there for work.

Bad news: My Crohn's clinical drug trial was less effective than I'd hoped, so I dropped out and immediately got INFINITELY WORSE. Now waiting out the 30-day washout period before I can start a new trial.

Good news: Lost 10 pounds in a week.

Bad news: HOLY FUCK ANOTHER MONTH OF THIS.

Let's talk about TV!

I was just lamenting to [personal profile] per_aspera_ad_astra how I never talk about TV anymore, and all I post are linkspams, and lately I find myself having things to say, so let's talk superhero TV shows!

First, The Flash, which got Felicitified this week. Read more... )

I was going to get into my Agents of SHIELD feels, too - in that it's gotten to be a much better show, but in a way that proves they should've just done what they're doing now from the beginning - but this is already rather long and capslocky, so maybe we'll save that for tomorrow, along with all the Marvel previews and leaked videos from this week's announcement.

In which the ability to even is lost, and a search party formed

So, we all remember the guy who was allergic to making plans, right? We should, it was only a week ago, don't tell me your short-term memory is that bad. Well, this is STILL GOING ON because it turns out this is a dude who does not know when to let it go.

In which my expectations for a first date include... a date

Well hey, we haven't had a horrendous online dating story in a while! Mostly because I let my match.com account expire and started planning my future as a crazy cat lady. But now [personal profile] per_aspera_ad_astra is all, like, sickeningly happy with some guy she met on there, making her the second of my college friends to have success on that site, so back I go. This is my first attempt.

Okay I lied...

One more Comic-Con linkspam. At least there's some other stuff...

* Jon Stewart's directorial debut, Rosewater, now has a release date.

* Laura Benanti will be appearing on Nashville.

* Undateable has been renewed for a second season.

* Photos and the first trailer for Into the Woods. It's... like they don't want you to know it's a musical or something? Weird.

* Girls' Allison Williams will be playing Peter Pan in NBC's live broadcast. You know what? I know a lot of people hate her (mostly because of her character on Girls), but I think she's actually a good choice.

* New Mockingjay trailer! I think this premiered at Comic-Con? There was weirdly little Hunger Games presence this year.

* Interviews with the creative team and the cast of Hannibal. (Spoilers for season 3.)

* Here's an interview with James Gunn and the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy. I got to see the movie earlier this week and it is delightful! It is just as off-the-wall kooky as you'd expect from a movie in which 2/5 of the heroes are a talking raccoon and a giant tree person, Chris Pratt is PERFECT (he's like Andy Dwyer crossed with Han Solo), and it feels pretty different from all the prior Marvel movies.

* So, Chris Pratt has been asked a lot about his weight loss (in the link above, he talks about emotional eating and having body image issues), and I'm actually kind of amazed Marvel has let him talk so candidly. I mean, he talked about how they literally sent people to his house to weigh him every week. Granted, I'm sure he's not the only one - and it probably happens to actresses all the time even when they're not playing superheroes - but nobody ever talks about the gross body policing quite that bluntly. It's actually kind of uncomfortable.

And now for your daily dose of adorable idiots...

Probably the last linkspam

* Paul Bettany talks about playing the Vision. I kind of get the sense he misses showing up for 45 minutes and walking away with a bag of cash? lol

* Kevin Feige talks about Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and other Marvel stuff.

* Karen Gillan talks about Guardians of the Galaxy and her new TV series, Selfie.

* Another perspective on the Age of Ultron footage shown at Comic-Con.

* Here is a pretty thorough round-up of video interviews with the cast.

* Here is also the full playlist of Nerd HQ videos. So far, I've only watched the Orphan Black panel (which is even more off the chain than last year's - seriously, pants come off and Zachary Levi curls into the fetal position, possibly in horror at what he hath wrought).

* This post-finale video from the TVD panel is pretty hilarious. Ian: "Nuh-uh. I've been killed off a TV show before and this is not how they do it." Paul: "Does this mean that I get more money?" CANDICE'S SANDWICH. And Nina knocking down walls to expand her dressing room, lmao.

* Completely non-Comic-Con related, Audra McDonald talks about playing Billie Holliday and her previous attempted suicide, which I never knew about before, wow. Like, when I first saw the headline, I thought it meant Billie, because that seemed more likely, but no. Audra, who went on to be a Tony-winning goddess.

I will put the rest of this under a cut, because it has precisely zero newsworthiness, and is entirely the cast of Avengers being ridiculous and adorably goofy together.

I fucking love these dipshits )

Another traumatized post-Hannibal linkspam

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I think we all need this right now:

WAIT EVEN THE KITTEN IS A CANNIBAL OMG. THIS REALLY IS THE DARKEST TIMELINE.

Links:

* Christian Borle is the latest actor to be announced as a guest star on Masters of Sex.

* The final episodes of Enlisted will air on Sundays in June.

* Gillian Jacobs will be making an appearance on Girls.

* Post-mortems with the creators of The Americans following Wednesday night's season finale.

* Julie Plec talks about The Vampire Diaries' season finale.

* The Man of Steel sequel finally got a full title - and prompted a great number of legal jokes.

* If you can't wait for Avengers: Age of Ultron, here are some spoilery tidbits to tide you over.

* Also, it appears the Guardians of the Galaxy set visit articles have been unembargoed.

* This is an excellent breakdown of what Agents of SHIELD got right and wrong - especially the way the show was hamstrung by premiering in the fall and then basically marking time until Captain America: The Winter Soldier came out. All they really needed was a six-episode intro arc to establish the characters, the status quo, and get the team working well together, and then blow things up with CA:TWS.

* Edgar Wright is no longer directing Ant-Man.

* Neil Patrick Harris is writing an autobiography... as a Choose Your Own Adventure book, of course.

* Another Jennifer Lawrence article, in which Josh Hutcherson helps cure her hiccups. (He seems oddly practiced at it, lol.)

* The AV Club picks out 10 episodes that demonstrate how The West Wing pwned network drama conventions. Agree? Disagree? Prefer [personal profile] pocochina's must-watch list?

Worth Every Penny

[personal profile] per_aspera_ad_astra and I saw Veronica Mars in the theater today yesterday. You guys. We saw VERONICA MARS. In a MOVIE THEATER.

I AM NOT SURE I CAN FORM COHERENT THOUGHTS RIGHT NOW TBH. EVERYTHING I COULD POSSIBLY HAVE WANTED. I did pose the question to Kelly afterward whether or not people who had never seen the show would enjoy it, and I think they'd be missing like 60% of the enjoyment, but for the fans who watched the show and loved it and Kickstarted it and wore official Veronica Mars T-shirts to the movie theater (yes, we totally did that) it was PERFECT.

Kelly: "It felt like an extra-long awesome episode. Classic VMars!"

[Pause for many birthday celebrations.]

I started this post yesterday, and then... things happened. I had a good birthday! And now that I have had several hours to digest (both the movie and the birthday cake) I have slightly more coherent thoughts.

Meme: December 6 (oops)

I am a day late in posting this, because I did not anticipate that yesterday's office holiday party would be OFF THE CHAIN. This year, the organization did away with the traditional office lunch for unknown (but probably scandalous) reasons, and just gave us the afternoon off. So some of my coworkers decided to have our own holiday lunch at this German bar where beer comes in three sizes: half-liter, liter, and DAS BOOT.

SEVEN HOURS LATER, when we were paying our second tab (because they made us close out the tab when they switched from lunch to dinner, lol), the bartender jokingly asked us if we would like to see a breakfast menu. We kinda laughed, but also kinda wanted eggs and bacon.

While I suspect a rambling post written under those circumstances would have been HILARIOUS, I also kind of had serious thoughts about this one, so... here we are.

Today's - er, yesterday's topic comes from [personal profile] pocochina, and remember that I am still taking requests. Tell me what to talk about!

Meme of DOOM

[personal profile] ever_neutral tagged me in some meme that means I now have to answer a list of questions (WHICH I HELPED TO COME UP WITH. DAMMIT I SHOULD'VE SUGGESTED EASIER QUESTIONS). I'm supposed to tag people and make them answer questions now, but whatever. I'm leaving town for the weekend, so I cannot be fucked. If you are so moved, comment with an answer to a question I did not ask. It'll be like Jeopardy.

Linkspam + more top fives

* Following the success of the movie, Les Miserables is, unsuprisingly, coming back to Broadway. Has anyone seen the "reimagined" show? I am torn - I am kind of curious to see what's been changed, but I also don't want to be disappointed if it's TOO reimagined, lol. Speaking of Broadway, I'm going up to New York next weekend with my mom. We're taking our chances at the TKTS booth, but if anyone has recommendations, I'm open. Right now, I'm leaning toward either The Mystery of Edwin Drood or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

* My bb Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick in a movie version of The Last Five Years! First of all, I am shocked this is happening, because TLFY is not a very well-known show, so I'm not sure what kind of movie audience they'd get (surely not the blockbuster of Les Miserables) although maybe they're counting on the new off-Broadway production to drum up attention? Second, I am curious how they plan to adapt it, given the structure of the show. But mostly: YAY.

* The Americans has been renewed for a second season already. After only four episodes have aired. That's how good it is, people.

* Nifty Catching Fire posters.

* Men and women apparently tweet differently. Women are more frequent users of "emoticons, ellipses (…), expressive lengthening (nooo waaay), repeated exclamation marks, puzzled punctuation (combinations of ? and !), the abbreviation omg, and transcriptions of backchannels like ah, hmm, ugh, and grr." As a frequent offender in allllllllll of those categories, this piqued my interest. I haven't read through the entire study, but the first thing that pops into my head is whether Twitter-speak might be influenced by the culture of more gendered spaces on the internet (compare the predominately female LJ/DW to the predominately male Reddit). We tend to adopt the speech patterns of our social group, and I know that I at least have been very influenced by my fandom experience. (I NEVER USED TO CAPSLOCK SO MUCH. NOW I HAVE ALL THE FEELINGS.)

TVD 4.02

So, I was all set to do reaction posts this year, and then the season premiere was so godawful boring that I couldn't be fucked. It felt like they were just checking the boxes on what we expected to happen - Elena in transition? Check! Damon is pissed at Stefan? Check! Matt feels guilty? Check! Bonnie does a spell? Check! - without putting any effort into making it interesting for the audience. And I was all, "What happened to my shooooooow?" and resolved to watch the rest of the season drunk off my ass.

AND THEN THIS HAPPENED.

Links and memes

Links:

* Mad Men's Matthew Weiner and Christina Hendricks talk about "The Other Woman".

* In case you were worried, Peggy's departure from SCDP does not mean she's leaving the show. In fact, Elisabeth Moss and the show's other stars are finalizing deals for seasons 6 and 7.

* Joss Whedon is directing Avengers 2 and involved in a possibly-related Marvel TV show.

* Like Homeland? Now you can watch the original Israeli series that inspired it. It's available on Hulu.

* Latest Catching Fire casting: Meta Golding as Enobaria. I... kind of facepalmed, ngl. I mean, I'm not surprised. But. So far, the only POC casting is the cannibalistic killer? Really?

Memes:

* Name a character, and I'll name a book I think he/she enjoys.

* Comment with a pairing – ANY pairing – and I will comment with ONE GIF expressing my feelings about that pairing.

* Check my fandoms, my favorite characters, the pairings I like the most, my kinks, my fictional crushes, anything. Now, in a friendly and possibly teasing way, point out the obvious and not so obvious trends or fetishes you see in my tastes. Maybe I'm nuts for all vampire stories, or have a thing for men who smoke, or I'm fond for the tsundere archetype, or I'm into rival slash. Let's point out all of those you've noticed I tend to squee about during our friendship.

This icon has never been more appropriate

As part of my renewed effort at making this dating thing work, I've been advised to "know what I want." I mean, when I try to create a wish list of the qualities/characteristics that I want my ideal guy to have, I typically get as far as "intelligent, good sense of humor... uh... likes Buffy?" and give up. I am all like, "I DON'T KNOOOOOOW. I DON'T HAVE A ~TYPE." Even though I totally do. I just don't really know what it is?

But, as we all know, I have FAR TOO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. So I figured, maybe that's a place to start? Figure out what I like about these particular characters I envisage as my future husbands, and see what they have in common!
