Happy New Year, everybody. I have been all preoccupied with family and holiday stuff lately, so other than talking about Into the Woods (PRIORITIES), I have been largely MIA. * So, The Newsroom did an episode on college campus rape. That went about as well as you'd expect. So in case you need a reminder of why we put up with him despite his being an enormous douchecanoe, here you go.

* It feels like we're reaching the point where everything - even, apparently, single episodes of television - now get "oral histories." Whole TV series, I can understand. A film, if it's especially interesting, sure. If you can get most of the cast and creative team back together to talk about the experience, it can be like a reunion. But here we have basically four people talking about the BtVS episode "Hush."

* Showrunner John Rogers' post-mortems are back! He used to do them after every Leverage episode, and he's doing it again for The Librarians.

* Jed and Maurissa talk about the Agents of SHIELD midseason finale. Plus, an interview with the show's latest casualty (which I was semi-expecting, but it's still annoying, since there are at least four or five other characters I'd rather they'd killed off instead). Also, Blair Underwood will be appearing as Melinda May's ex when the show returns in the spring.

* Mindy Kaling talks about the midseason finale of The Mindy Project.

* Director Rob Marshall gets defensive about changes to Into the Woods.

* Meanwhile, the folks behind The Last Five Years (seemingly a much more difficult show to adapt) talk about making it work as a film ~~without cutting out songs or characters I'M JUST SAYING~~. Plus, here's the trailer full of singing.

* Mark Hamill will be guest-starring on The Flash, reprising a role he played in the 1990s series.

* Felicia Day has written a book. Or is writing. It's not quiiiiite done yet, but she's announced it anyway.

* Lots of Into the Woods stuff from broadway.com - an interview with James Corden and Emily Blunt (I am trying very hard not to be that guy, but I hate nearly every line reading in that clip at the beginning, lol). And here's Meryl Streep with a different clip (Bwuh? Blue moon?). Also a behind the scenes video, which includes a lot of singing. I will confess to being very impressed with Lilla Crawford's singing, but I desperately wish we'd gotten to hear her line, "You could not, Mr. LIAR!" in that scene with Jack, because that is probably the most-repeated line in my house, lol.

* Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin talk about the Flash vs. Arrow crossover, which starts tonight on The Flash and continues tomorrow on Arrow.

* Parks & Recreation has a schedule for its final season, and I am kinda bummed that it'll be up against The Flash on Tuesdays, because clearly I like them both.

* Much as I enjoyed the Suicide Squad's appearances on Arrow, I had little interest in the announced film, but the just-announced cast is insane: Jared Leto and Margot Robbie as the Joker and Harley Quinn? Will Smith as Deadshot??

* Finally, we get our first real look at Better Call Saul. It's... eh.

* Unless you live under a rock (or don't care about Star Wars), you've probably already seen the teaser for Episode VII. I... don't particularly care about Star Wars - I mean, I liked the original trilogy, but I hated Phantom Menace and never bothered with the rest of that trilogy - so I'm kinda just meh until they show me some Luke, Leia, and Han. The one thing that did give me nostalgia feels? The theme song.

* An interview with Agents of SHIELD EP Jeff Bell. I admit, I rolled my eyes pretty hard at the idea that Ward is "the new Spike." I hate to break it to you, Marvel, but Ward is about 10 times less interesting, and Brett Dalton is about 100 times less talented than James Marsters, and since being a villain is the only thing that's made him more than a talking block of wood, I don't know a single person who wants a redemption arc for Ward.

* Peter Capaldi is confirmed to be coming back for the next season of Doctor Who. Not that anyone really expected he wouldn't, since there's usually much more fanfare when a Doctor leaves and a new one is cast, and also we just did that at the beginning of THIS season. But. You know. In case you were worried. No confirmation on Jenna Coleman, however.

* If you're a fan of The Americans or Masters of Sex, you may be happy to hear that The Millers was canceled, thus freeing up Margo Martindale and Beau Bridges to return to those (much better) shows.

* With Mockingjay coming out soon, Jennifer Lawrence and the rest of the cast are out in full force. JLaw talks about the crazy ways her life has changed since accepting this role and makes plans to fight crime with Stephen Colbert, or possibly commit crimes as part of her downward spiral. Director Francis Lawrence discusses the pressure of being Philip Seymour Hoffman's last film, Sam Claflin talks a lot about his hair, and Natalie Dormer is her usual fierce self as always.

* Marvel has cast Daniel Bruhl to play an unspecified villain in Captain America: Civil War. No idea who he's actually playing, but here's some speculation, which also indicates that the Winter Soldier will still play a major role in the film. You know, in addition to Tony Stark being around, and Cap possibly having a whole new team, and introducing Black Panther... Man, this is going to be one really crowded movie; I'm not sure why they're even bothering to call it "Captain America" at this point.

* This is why it took so long to get Dancing Baby Groot merchandise.

* Rob Marshall and James Lapine talk about adapting Into the Woods for the film. I do not appreciate being told to "chill out." This is only THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF MY CHILDHOOD YOU ARE MESSING WITH HERE. That is, like, barely an exaggeration, you don't even know.

* First promo for Peter Pan live. Apparently, they are making quite a few changes from the original musical, but some of that's about making it less horribly racist, so I think even the purists would find it hard to argue with that one.

* Fantastic discussion of Connie Britton's career and magnificent hair.

* The new Into the Woods trailer actually features singing. You know, I had a dream (nightmare?) last night that I went to see it with my parents and it was AWFUL. And we ended up walking out, and I asked my mom how long we lasted and she looked at her watch and was like, "Twelve minutes." But it had felt like HOURS.

OMG just finished Arrow season 1 and I sort of feel like I've been cheating on Marvel this week but it's really, really good so I had to get that in before we get into all the Marvel stuff. Also, one thing I neglected to mention in my last post - OLIVER'S GREEN FACE PAINT. I find it endearingly ridiculous that, while suiting up for superheroing, this boy apparently stops to APPLY HIS EYE MAKEUP (because that is doing SUCH a good job of concealing his identity, what a humungous dork). On the other hand, I want whatever makeup remover he uses, because DAMN he can get that stuff wiped off quickly when reverting back to civilian Oliver.

ANYWAY. In case you missed it, earlier today Marvel announced what we all will be doing for the next five years, and the big news is that it includes Black Panther and Captain Marvel solo movies! \o/ Now we just have to wait until frickin' 2018 for the first female-led Marvel film. There's also the expected subtitles for Captain America 3 and Thor 3 (Civil War and Ragnarok, respectively), and confirmation that Avengers 3 and 4 will be a two-parter dealing with Thanos, subtitled Infinity War. Here's a live-blog of the announcement, at which RDJ and Chris Evans appeared and did an adorable little fighty thing, introduced Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, then played Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide whose side he'd be on in the Civil War.

Other Marvel stuff:

* No confirmation of the rumor that Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as Doctor Strange.

* An embargo on Age of Ultron interviews was apparently lifted this week as well, because there are interviews with the Chrises Evans and Hemsworth and with RDJ and Mark Ruffalo from the set. Also, here's a detailed breakdown of basically every frame of the trailer.

* Lots of info on the upcoming Agent Carter series from NYCC. I'm guessing it'll be yanked by the time I get this post up, but for now, here's the first TV spot for the series. I'll update when there's an official one released on YouTube.

* NPH is getting a variety show on NBC.

* TVD's Malese Jow is joining the cast of The Flash. Also, Wentworth Miller talks about playing Captain Cold on the show.

* Speaking of superhero stories that lay off the angst, The Flash has been picked up for a full season. It's lighthearted without being lightweight, and I am really enjoying it so far.

* Here's an interview with James Gunn and the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy. I got to see the movie earlier this week and it is delightful! It is just as off-the-wall kooky as you'd expect from a movie in which 2/5 of the heroes are a talking raccoon and a giant tree person, Chris Pratt is PERFECT (he's like Andy Dwyer crossed with Han Solo), and it feels pretty different from all the prior Marvel movies.

* So, Chris Pratt has been asked a lot about his weight loss (in the link above, he talks about emotional eating and having body image issues), and I'm actually kind of amazed Marvel has let him talk so candidly. I mean, he talked about how they literally sent people to his house to weigh him every week. Granted, I'm sure he's not the only one - and it probably happens to actresses all the time even when they're not playing superheroes - but nobody ever talks about the gross body policing quite that bluntly. It's actually kind of uncomfortable.

* The premiere of Better Call Saul has been pushed back to 2015, but it's been renewed for a second season in the meantime. Hey, AMC? I think you're doing that backwards.

* The Game of Thrones creators talk about the season 4 finale, as well as hints of what's to come in season 5.

* Stephen Sondheim revealed that the Into the Woods movie will have significant plot changes due to Disney-ification, which pretty much completely misses the point of the musical in the first place. (My new favorite description of this show is now "a dark, disturbing musical, where cherished heroes of classic fairy tales are systematically murdered.") I gotta go with my mom's reaction: "Ewwww. Well, we can still go see it to mock it."

* The one bright spot here is that all the Into the Woods talk this week pointed me toward a fascinating article from when the show first opened on Broadway in 1987.

* Mark Ruffalo was asked about a Hulk movie again - they're still "considering it," shocker - but the trailer for his new movie also looks pretty good.

* Oooh, I hope that All the Way, the Broadway play starring Bryan Cranston as LBJ, gets made into a movie with Bryan Cranston. Also, can't wait for his memoir.

* The newest Guardians of the Galaxy trailer actually gives us some sense of the plot of this thing, but it also makes the movie seem a lot more serious.

* The creator of Enlisted still has hope the show will continue on another network/platform. I would love to see it, but I'm not optimistic.

* I had not previously heard of Netflix's new series, Grace and Frankie, but now Martin Sheen will be starring in it, along with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

* I kind of think the delay of the 5th Bourne movie is just because Jeremy Renner is juggling about twelve movie franchises, but there are rumors that Matt Damon is coming back.

* Robert Downey Jr.'s movie The Judge now has a trailer.

HI GUYS. I went to San Diego and didn't tell you. And I missed SO much TV, including the Oscars, which I've had to piece together from GIFs. (Funny story: we actually kind of considered having an Oscar watching party, but we're all idiots from the eastern and central time zones who forgot that it started at 5PM on the west coast, so we're out at a restaurant eating dinner and someone's like, "Uh, guys, the Oscars are kinda half over...?") Not that I saw any of the nominated films, except Gravity. You better believe that we were Travoltifying our names when we were bored at work, though. Luka Bailerey, at your service, btw.

We also forgot that Tuesday was Mardi Gras, and apparently San Diego REALLY loves Mardi Gras, so... that was interesting. Certain coworkers of mine now refer to me as "Princess."

* Emmy Rossum talks about season 4 of Shameless, which has been fantastic.

Marvel stuff:

* I'm all for Chris Evans pursuing more directing gigs, but I hope he finds projects he can also star in, because otherwise I'd miss him as an actor.

* Speaking of, OMG this Captain America: The Winter Soldier clip! My bb! \o/ Plus, here's two new ads with new footage, and some speculation about the future of S.H.I.E.L.D. (and therefore Agents of...) in the MCU.

* Scarlett Johansson is pregnant, which will almost certainly impact filming for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

* Other Age of Ultron news: Marvel is locking in Thomas Kretschmann, who will appear as Baron von Strucker in AoU, in case they want to use him again, and adding Korean actress Kim Soo Hyun to the cast, in a yet to be announced supporting role.

* Not really a link, but I finally saw Thor: The Dark World. I don't have much to say about it because, other than Thor and Loki being adorably brotherly, I don't really have ~feels? Thor is probably the least interesting Avenger to me, Thor/Jane does nothing for me, and I'm mostly in it for the supporting characters, so as long as there's enough laughs, I don't mind that the plot's a bit of a mess. But yay for Zachary Levi joining the MCU!

* Marvel is airing a one-hour special on ABC about... themselves, basically. It's a one-hour commercial for their TV show and the 3 new movies coming out in the next year and a half. Which I will watch because I am a sucker for new footage.

Movie, musical, and movie musical stuff:

* Veronica Mars has been added to the Kindle Worlds legal fanfiction list. Plus, lots of photos from the movie (one week, you guys!). You can actually watch the first two minutes of the movie, but before you get excited, it's basically a "previously on" summary of the TV series.

* Steven Spielberg wants to remake West Side Story. I know people get tetchy about remaking classics, but maybe this time they'll cast lead actors who can actually sing?

* Speaking of movie musical remakes, Quvenzhane Wallis is freakin' adorable in the trailer for the new Annie.

* Into the Woods is getting an off-Broadway revival. Not sure how I feel about this "stripped-down" version.

* Wow, Philip Seymour Hoffman has died.

* Dylan Farrow finally speaks out about being sexually abused by her adoptive father, Woody Allen. (For reference, here is the original 1992 Vanity Fair article that first publicized the allegations.)

* On Super Bowl Sunday, a powerful ad from the National Congress of American Indians on the name of Washington's football team.

* Jesse Eisenberg will play Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel, and Jeremy Irons is Alfred.

* Michael Pitt will be appearing on Hannibal.

* Geoff Stults talks about his new comedy, Enlisted, which so far I am really enjoying. Stults plays the oldest of three Army brothers - the other two are Veronica Mars' Chris Lowell and Suburgatory's Parker Young, both hilarious here - all serving in the same rear-detachment unit of misfits and screwups.

* Anna Kendrick talks about filming Into the Woods.

Stuck at work, waiting for it to officially be the long weekend. Lots of Catching Fire links:

* The genderbending of Katniss/Peeta was one of the first things that stood out to me in reading the series, so I'm glad other people are picking up on it.

* How realistic are the economic conditions of Panem?

* Francis Lawrence talks about filming the cliffhanger ending. Also, how they snuck in Johanna's f-bombs, lol.

* Catching Fire review/discussion: "I think Peeta might be Steve Rogers in another life" = OMFG THAT IS SO TRUE. CANNOT UNSEE. ~~And now I am imagining the Avengers competing in the Hunger Games. Natasha would wipe the floor with everyone.~~

* Nine ways in which this blog author clearly missed the point of Mockingjay. Yes, Mockingjay is depressing, people die, and horrible things happen to everyone. That is the ENTIRE POINT.

* This Catching Fire discussion actually gets at that first "problem" of Katniss being a passive participant by pointing out that Katniss has never been in control of the action: "Katniss is tough, resourceful, and a survivor, but not really a plotter, and not one who likes to think about the big picture, or what her role in that picture might be. [...] She can be brilliant in the moment, like when she threatens to eat those poison berries, but she’s generally being kicked around by friend and foe alike." She never wanted to be "the girl on fire." She never wanted to be the Mockingjay or the leader of a rebellion. It was a strategy she accepted reluctantly as a means to survive.

Fortunately, the films "do a better job than the books at keeping her from seeming dim or weak as a consequence," so I hope they can manage to portray the nuances of a character with PTSD and her role as a somewhat passive figurehead in Mockingjay without making her less sympathetic.

* LOL Marvel have finally confirmed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen are playing the Maximoffs. EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS, YOU GUYS.

* More discussion of Marvel and how the Avengers franchise is more like television than movies.

* Yay! I'm glad J. August Richards will be back on Agents of SHIELD. Please make him a regular character.

* Words cannot express how desperately I covet the full series Breaking Bad DVD set. The behind-the-scenes documentary alone sounds worth it.

* Stephen Sondheim wrote a new song for Meryl Streep for Into the Woods. Because only new original songs are eligible for Oscars. *sigh*
