Topic for today comes from [personal profile] mcmegan: Who was your favorite concert you've seen/who is your ultimate concert bucket lister?

Oooooh, favorite concert is a toss-up between (don't judge me) Hootie and the Blowfish and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

I must have been around 12 years old or so when I saw Hootie. And it was completely unexpected, too. We were on a family vacation in Charleston, which is where they're from, and I happened to spot a flyer for a concert that just happened to be on our last night there. And I begged and pleaded with my parents to see if we could get tickets, and we did, and I was SO EXCITED OMG because they were one of my favorite bands ever when I was twelve whatever they still are. In fact, I still have the T-shirt I bought at that concert, even though it surely doesn't fit me anymore.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra was when I was in college, maybe? Or a little after, I'm not totally sure. Anyway, they do a tour every year during the Christmas season, and it just so happened that one of my dad's friends worked at the Wachovia Center (or whatever they're calling it these days) so we were able to get VIP tickets with an employee discount. If you've never seen them in concert, I totally recommend it, because they put on a spectacular show.

As for a bucket list... hmmmm, I'm not sure I really have one? I've never been a big concert person. In fact, most of the concerts I've been to, I stumbled upon without much planning, lol. So, you tell me - who MUST I see live? Who are you dying to see? And what was your favorite concert?

Hey hey hey! Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes (I think I got around to them all, but if I didn't, please let me know! I'm not hatin' - just overwhelmed, lol.)

As you may know, this week is Spring Break for me, so I took the opportunity to take a week off from work, since I had no classes. It was supposed to be relaxing yet productive, but if I wanted to relax, I probably shouldn't have bought a house, you know? I've just about got the mortgage stuff straightened out (after a minor "OMG this is so expensive, what was I THINKING???" freakout earlier today), and I'm having the home inspection done on Friday.

I did manage to have some fun this weekend, since the oh-so-Irish [personal profile] mcmegan came to visit and we went to the Shamrock Fest in DC. Lots of Irish bands, lots of people in crazy outfits, and a LOT of fried food (my stomach was not pleased), but the main attractions were Hotspur - Megan's like a superfan or something, they know her by name! - and Dropkick Murphys, both of which were great.

We also got our picture taken with a leprechaun:

It's a different sort of awesome ladies picspam )

Still working out the kinks on the RSS/access-only posts issue (i.e. it didn't work at all, so I searched around for a comm that might have the answer, found nothing, and filed a support request). In the meantime, let's do a meme!

Comment to this entry (if you want to) and I will give you a letter. Name 5 songs you love beginning with that letter.
(Or by all means comment if you have something to say even if you don't want to do it yourself.)

[personal profile] beer_good_foamy gave me the letter "E":

Music meme, snagged from [livejournal.com profile] alwaysjbj:

1. Put your iTunes, Windows Media Player, iPod, etc. on shuffle.
2. For each question, press the next button to get your answer.
3. You must write that song name down no matter how silly it sounds.

I dunno, this seems a little bit pointless, but I was thinking about doing another iPod Roulette post anyway, so I suppose we might as well include random questions.

Typically, I use this space to talk about the love of my life (musical theater), but I got all caught up in the Jersey pride thing that I decided to do something a little different today.

Oh, sure, I could've posted something about Jersey Boys, but... I've never seen Jersey Boys, and the soundtrack is basically just Four Seasons songs, so it's not like I'd be enlightening the masses or anything, you know? (But my parents saw Jersey Boys and they said it was great, so there's my plug for the day.)

Instead, I'm going to post my favorite JERSEY SONGS.

You know what pisses me off? When people leave their shit in the dryer for FORTY-FIVE MINUTES after it's finished. Meanwhile, my clothes are finished washing and have NO PLACE TO GO. Fuck you.

In other news, my apartment smells like lemon cookies. I don't know why this is so, but it's making me hungry.

I'm listening to Christian Kane's new songs, which I bought awhile ago, but forgot about and rediscovered in the big transfer of music from the old computer to the new one. I like them, but I can't help thinking that "House Rules" sounds like it should be in a beer commercial. Is it just me?

Why have I never heard of Less Than Perfect?? In response to my Zac Levi post yesterday, [livejournal.com profile] dragonflylady77 linked me to this, which led me to THIS, and now I NEED THIS SHOW.

Also, See Jane Date is now in my queue. What can I say? I'm easy.

So, I seem to have made it through another JM event without serious mishap (although we were sans [livejournal.com profile] slaymesoftly). I was pretty much an idiot right off the bat when I left my ticket at home, and had to backtrack 20 minutes to get it, but I still managed to get there in time for dinner with [livejournal.com profile] seductivembrace (I've never gone 90 before!). It was a lot of fun, and mucho thanks to her for letting me crash in her hotel room.

Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] sevvy_o.

* Step 1: Put your playlist on random.
* Step 2: Post the first line from the first 10 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing.
* Step 3: Strike out the songs when someone guesses correctly.

I did the same thing she did and did 20 just for fun, and also took out instrumentals and showtunes.

In celebration of Apple tech support fixing my iTunes (and doing it for free even though my iPod warranty is expired), without making me cry or feel like an idiot, like the Dell tech support people do (seriously, I have never been on the phone with them while not in tears), which is only one of the many, many reasons I'm getting a Mac next time I need a new computer (another reason being the fact that my computer suddenly, inexplicably failed to recognize iTunes despite it having being installed on my computer for about 8 months), and... that sentence kind of got away from me there.

Anyway, in celebration, I switched the ol' iPod to shuffle and here's what came up, along with the original music videos for as many as I could find. And since many of these songs are from the '90s, the videos are hilarious.

On an unrelated note, does anyone else here use Office 2007? Because I really would like to know what setting I can use so that when I copy and paste from Word it doesn't require me to go in and delete all the font and style html so that it appears in LJ's default font. (It would also be nice if I could set the default font in Word, but no matter how many times I change it, it automatically fucking changes itself back.) I never had this problem when I used Word on my Mac. *sigh*

In this post, I asked for topics to write about, and [profile] bendy1 asked me to talk about music. I fear this will be somewhat boring, as I don't exactly keep up on new or popular music. Seriously, I still listen to some of the same bands I liked in middle school (but then again, I also listen to the Beatles, which my parents liked in middle school). If you're hoping to get good music recommendations, this is probably not the place.

I never listen to the radio anymore, except occasionally talk radio. Mostly, I listen to CDs in the car, and my iPod the rest of the time. I've never watched MTV or VH1 (do they still do music? it seems like all reality shows these days), and MySpace frightens me. I don't know where else people find bands, so I only listen to what I stumble across accidentally.

Most of my new music lately has come from TV shows. I went through a serious West Wing phase in college and tracked down a bunch of songs from there, which makes for a very eclectic collection, ranging from Yo-Yo Ma to Bif Naked to Jeff Buckley. I also got a ton of stuff from Buffy and Veronica Mars, which were probably up-and-coming bands at the time, but as both those shows are now canceled, I'm sure I'm woefully outdated.

My iPod is probably pretty embarrassing for other people to listen to. Aside from audio books, which totally kill the shuffle momentum, I've got things on there I don't even want to listen to (Clay Aiken?? Dashboard Confessional? Really?), but for some reason I never delete anything. I have a lot of musical soundtracks on there, because I enjoy belting out off-key songs from Rent or Wicked while I'm doing the dishes or cleaning the apartment. I can only hope it annoys my neighbors, as payback for their absurdly loud TV watching.

Just for kicks, I decided to do that thing where you put your iPod or iTunes on random and list the first 20 songs that come up. Here's mine under the cut.

I just got my new James CD (Like a Waterfall). I'm pretty late to the party here, since most people seem to have gotten their CDs at the LA launch, or from people who went to the launch and brought home extra copies. I think this is the kind of CD that needs to grow on me. I liked it better the second time I listened to it. Musically, it's better than Civilized Man, but since I'm not at all familiar with any of these songs, they don't yet inspire the "aww, bless, it's James" fuzzy feelings that his earlier stuff does. Also, I have virtually no experience hearing these live (I've only been to one concert, and sadly, the four-hour traffic jam left more of an impression than the actual concert), so unlike most people, I'm not comparing these versions to live performances that may have been better or different. More detailed thoughts under the cut.

Also, I bought Christian Kane's CD (Kane - which is the name of both the band and the album) a couple weeks ago, and I can't help comparing the two a little bit. I LOVE Kane - it's very country, and I don't usually do country, but it's just so infectious, I can't help singing along (and I've noticed myself adopting a slight southern drawl when I do... this could also have to do with my recent love affair with Friday Night Lights). I'm impressed with CK's lyrics (especially when I compare them to James), and I think his band has a more cohesive sound than James and his random collection of musicians (seriously, either get yourself a band again or do the whole thing alone). I don't really see anyone who's not already a James fan enjoying his music, but Kane make me go, "Lindsey who?"
