Just watched a video of the full song "One Day More" (with Spanish subtitles!) from the movie. I am... underwhelmed? It's possible that this is just not a number that translates well to the screen, because the staging can't be replicated with any sort of realism. But all that cutting back and forth between the characters in different places just doesn't build the momentum the way the cast coming together into that big marching-in-place triangle does. It's a good thing the movie doesn't have an intermission, because that felt like a weak act closer.

I also am not impressed by the vocals in this song. Granted, it's not the easiest song to sing, but Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, and Amanda Seyfried all sounded weak. I know the live singing thing seems to impress a lot of people, but I can't help wondering if maybe they'd have been better off in a more ideal recording environment.

On the plus side, this clip does feature my Broadway boyfriend, Aaron Tveit, as Enjolras, which is the first I've seen of him. \o/ I miss his red vest, though. :(

What are your thoughts? Are you more or less excited for the movie now that you've gotten a preview? I was pretty pleased when the first trailers popped up, but the subsequent clips have been slightly disappointing. But, to be fair, I have a slight obsession with the show, so I'm hardly objective. Am I being too picky? lol

I know the live singing thing seems to impress a lot of people, but I can't help wondering if maybe they'd have been better off in a more ideal recording environment.

I kept seeing the trailer where they talked like this and was thinking, "Is that a GOOD IDEA? Maybe the people who never did that before were ON to something?" Especially since they didn't necessarily cast singers. I guess Jackman basically comes out of musical theater but I don't know if any of the other leads did.

(I don't really have any opinions about the trailer or about Les Miz itself, which I've never seen, but the presentation is weird.)

AHAHAHAHA YES EXACTLY. You know why live singing sounds good in a theater? ACOUSTICS. AKA a thing you cannot replicate by shoving a few boom mics at people.

You know, I think the reason I liked the first trailer so much was because it was just "I Dreamed a Dream," which is quiet and sad, and so the weak vocals fit the tone of the song. But when you have a big number that's supposed to blow the doors off the place? Not so much.

Picky? You? Surely you jest. LOL I don't have an opinion because I've never seen the show on stage. Can't say I've seen anything in the trailers shown so far that makes me want to run out and see the movie, either. But I'll probably end up watching it eventually.

I'd say go see the show if you have the opportunity, but to be fair, the movie is a lot cheaper...

I've been avoiding the online clips so I don't start comparing - the only one I've watched is the trailer because it's everywhere - but it's such a huge undertaking of a production that I'm interested to see how some of the scenes translate. I'm still over the moon excited - and I wonder what the film soundtrack will be like.

I don't plan to buy the film soundtrack, if only because I refuse to pay money for that dreadful Russell Crowe performance, lol, but Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, and Aaron Tveit did have nice versions of their songs that might be worth listening to again.

This is one of those musicals that I enjoy the music of but am meh on the story, but I know we'll go see it because Kathy loves it with a mad passion, so I am prepared to just sit back and enjoy the scenery.
