1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?
Usually paper, unless I get lazy.
2. Real tree or artificial?
Artificial. When I was younger, we got real trees for years, and they kept getting bigger and bigger, until the Griswold-esque 15 ft monstrosity that my dad and I cut down ourselves, dragged for 2 miles through the mud and sand, and ended up having to cut the top off because we only have a 12 ft ceiling in the living room. Then, it fell over in the middle of the night and all the ornaments broke, and my dad had to tie it to the wall to get it to stand up. My mom put her foot down, and we've had an artificial tree ever since. Now that I live in my own apartment, I have a teeny tiny (2 ft) artificial Charlie Brown tree.
3. When do you put up the tree?
Thanksgiving weekend, mostly because that's when I'm at my parents' house to help.
4. When do you take the tree down?
We leave it up as long as possible. Usually mid-January.
5. Do you like Eggnog?
Yep.
6. Favourite gift received as a child?
A doll house that my dad built for me. It wasn't an exact replica of our house, but some of the rooms were pretty close (my dad used scraps of wallpaper from our house, and matched the rooms). Of course, at the time, I thought it was Santa, and it wasn't until a couple years later I found out my dad had made it himself. I always wondered how Santa got our wallpaper.
7. Do you have a nativity scene?
Not in my apartment, but my mom has a really nice ceramic one that she made in pottery class.
8. Hardest person to buy for?
My college-age (male) cousins. I have no idea what they like.
9. Easiest person to buy for?
My mom. She drops the biggest hints ever.
10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?
When I was in high school, my boyfriend used to get me these expensive, "collectible" things: dolls, music boxes, etc. They were all very pretty, but absolutely useless, and I knew he couldn't really afford it, and I hated that he spent so much money on something that would just sit on my shelf and collect dust.
11. Mail or email Christmas cards?
This year, neither. Too much effort (I'm being a grinch). But in the past, I've done mail.
12. Favourite Christmas Movie?
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. What can I say? I can identify (see above re: Christmas tree).
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
Thanksgiving weekend. This is the first year in a while that I've actually gone shopping on Black Friday (no, I did not get up at 4am), but I usually go on Saturday or Sunday.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
Probably. I don't remember anything specific, but I have occasionally regifted.
15. Favourite thing to eat at Christmas?
Christmas cookies! We always make butter cookies, it's our signature cookie, and everyone in the family looks forward to them (including me). When I was younger, my mom used to hide the cookie tins until Christmas, so that my dad and I wouldn't sneak any.
16. Clear lights or coloured on the tree?
I have colored on my Charlie Brown tree, but my parents' tree has a "white and gold" theme, so they use white lights.
17. Favourite Christmas song?
I don't think I could pick just one. I love "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo" by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. (Okay, I love everything by TSO.) Also, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "The First Noel." And of course, the perennial favorite, "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer." I used to play it on the piano, and my cousins would sing along, and my grandmother would pretend not to be offended.
18. Travel for Christmas or stay at home?
We always stayed home when I was younger, but now that I live on my own, I'm a traveler. I go to my parents' house.
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeers?
Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen. Oh, and Rudolph.
20. Angel on the tree top or a star?
Angel. The year of the Griswold tree, her poor head got smooshed against the ceiling, so now she looks like she has a permanent stiff neck, but we use her anyway.
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
Usually one present Christmas Eve (because I'm impatient) and the rest Christmas morning.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of year?
The crowds at the mall and the people that would sacrifice their firstborn for a good parking space.
23. What I love most about Christmas?
That general good feeling you get, because it's the holidays and it's all cheery and loving and everything. Plus, I like when everything's decorated all pretty.
24. What I love least about Christmas?
Hmm... I don't know. I like Christmas.
Usually paper, unless I get lazy.
