My TV Feels

I've picked up several new shows recently, because when I thought about what was missing from my life, the obvious answer was MOAR TV. (Also because the interwebs have been DEAD lately. People! Entertain me! I'm finally caught up on House, which should tell you how bored I was.)
Here are some things to keep you busy while waiting for The Vampire Diaries to come back from (another!) hiatus.
1. Skins - I have now seen all of Gen 1 and Gen 2, and I'm kind of thinking I should stop there? I really liked Gen 2, but whereas I basically loved every single character in Gen 1 (oh, except I HATED Anwar/Sketch), with Gen 2, I was only really invested in Effy, Cook (but not Effy/Cook, and it took until S4 for me to really like Cook), Naomi/Emily in S3, and occasionally Pandora. I have only heard vague things about Gen 3, but I gather that Skins is a show with diminishing returns...
2. Lost Girl - I'd seen one or two people mention this show before, and I think two seasons have aired in Canada? Anyway, Syfy just started airing it, so I got caught up this weekend. I've only seen, like, six episodes, though, so don't spoil me! It's an urban fantasy sort of deal, where all supernatural beings are different types of Fae. It has a kick-ass female main character who has recently discovered her Fae origins and is trying to learn more about the family she never knew. She also occasionally fights crime. Also, ANNA SILK!! (aka Erica's friend/girlcrush Cassidy on Being Erica) LOVE HER.
3. Awake - I've only seen the pilot so far, but I am intrigued. Officially, it doesn't premiere until March, but the first episode is available online. It's about a guy who gets in a car accident and ends up leading two parallel lives - one where his wife died in the crash, and the other where his son died. He can't tell which one is real, or if he's going mad with grief, but if it means losing either his wife or his son, he has no desire to get better. Kind of Sliding Doors-esque, except that he's living both lives at the same time.
4. The River - Horror series set in the Amazon. I am generally not a huge horror fan, but I was bored and it stars Leslie Hope (Jack Bauer's wife on 24) and Paul Blackthorne (also from 24, lol, but more recently The Dresden Files). Hope plays the wife of the host of a travel/adventure TV series who disappeared while filming in the Amazon. She's determined to find her husband, and the network agrees to fund the expedition, as long as the show's producer (Blackthorne) goes along to film the whole thing. Then spooky shit starts to happen.
5. The Fades - Another supernaturalish show, this time with ghosts. I really wanted to like it, because it stars Natalie Dormer (Anne Boleyn on The Tudors), but... I really wasn't feeling it. I thought she'd have a bigger role, but she's mostly dead the whole time? (This is not a spoiler. She dies within the first five minutes of the pilot.) Good thing all the main dudes can see dead people, I guess? I only watched two episodes so far, and I think there are three more eps available through On Demand. Should I keep going?
Still on my radar: Smash, Alcatraz, and Touch.

Date: Feb. 21st, 2012 08:59 pm (UTC)Smash- I like it so far. I've heard it call the Glee for people who like theater, but I feel that doesn't give it enough credit. At least this has a real plot and much better pacing.
Alcatraz- I like it. Not groundbreaking, but very interesting and keeps me intrigued.
Touch- I really enjoyed the premiere. I was worried at first with all those plot lines that nothing would be resolved, or it was gonna become like Lost, but I appreciated getting some answers.

Date: Feb. 21st, 2012 09:38 pm (UTC)I want to like Alcatraz more, but at the moment, it's the show I watch while making icons and only half paying attention...

Date: Feb. 21st, 2012 09:19 pm (UTC)I haven't seen any of these! But I like your summaries. I approve.
Also a feeling I have: TVD goes on a ridiculous number of hiatuses (hiati?).
And last: Have you seen Leverage? That's how I've filled my boredom-filled hours of late, and I LOVE IT. And I want more people to love it with me. So, if you continue to be bored...

Date: Feb. 21st, 2012 09:48 pm (UTC)But I had noticed people talking about how it's totally gone downhill in the last season or two, and I really don't see it? I mean, it was always a fairly mediocre show where the cases are completely formulaic and the storylines are frequently OTT ridiculous. It's still a decent multi-tasking show for me - i.e. it's easy to follow while only half paying attention, and it sometimes makes me laugh.

Date: Feb. 21st, 2012 09:50 pm (UTC)Although I hear a lot of people were pretty annoyed with how Cuddy/House was handled.
I would dropped the show when they killed off Kutner, if I hadn't given up on it already.

Date: Feb. 21st, 2012 09:58 pm (UTC)I think it helps that I have very low investment in the show. :) Nothing they do can upset me at this point.

Date: Feb. 21st, 2012 11:00 pm (UTC)Alcatraz is fun, a little bit like Lost but more like a procedural. It also has Parminder Nagra, who I've loved since Bend It Like Beckham back in the day.

Date: Feb. 21st, 2012 11:44 pm (UTC)lol House. I used to LOVE that show, okay? In its first few season. It's the constant ensemble fuckery that bored me. Also, Cuddy/House and their forced Epic Love pretty much ruined the show dynamic for me. /random bitchery
Woe, TVD. I feel like that show's in a slump tbh. Hopefully the epic Damon flashback episode returns my vigour. I expect no less than sheer magnificence.
