Why yes, they are! After an... extended hiatus, shall we say, the Awesome Ladies meme is back!

Day Twenty: Favorite female antagonist
Katherine Pierce, Nina Myers, Lilah Morgan, Admiral Helena Cain


I started out just planning to do one picspam of all the antagonizing ladies, but... Katherine kind of took over? So she gets her own. One of the things I really wanted to do with this category is to look at it as a relationship - in order to be an antagonist, you have to, well, antagonize someone. :) So I not only wanted this to be a picspam of awesome ladies, but specifically showing them with the men (and occasionally women) they were playing off of. Which, naturally, when one of the relationships you want to explore is Damon/Katherine/Stefan, IT'S GONNA GET CRAZY, YO.


I kind of felt conflicted - mainly with Lilah - in that I wanted to show both sides of the story, you know? Sometimes the antagonists have the upper hand, but eventually they always get what's coming to them, and so that's why we have Damon trying to stake Katherine, Nina in handcuffs, Six shooting Cain. And although there's no shortage of Angel choking, threatening, or otherwise making things unpleasant for Lilah, I couldn't bring myself to include them in here. Maybe it's because the other women have all shown themselves equally capable of physical violence, but while Lilah's a kick-ass woman, most of her power is verbal and strategic, so being the object of physical threats and violence is more disturbing. Or maybe it's just that Angel's kind of a dick and doesn't deserve to get one over on Lilah?

On that topic, it's interesting how little it concerns me when Damon and Stefan physically attack/threaten Katherine. (E.g. Stefan torturing Katherine in "Memory Lane".) Probably because she nearly always has the emotional power? (By virtue of corrupting their innocence, lol.) Actually, that's one thing I love about TVD in general. The men are all emotionally at the mercy of these fierce bitches, haha.

Hmm, I tend to be less bothered when it's physical power, not emotional. Like, Katherine is older and stronger than they are, so they can bounce her off walls and it's no big deal. Lilah, for all her sass and general badassery, is still human and thus easily breakable. I also have less problem with guys attacking Buffy, Darla, Caroline, etc.

I guess the emotional power doesn't do much for me because - as with Lilah - I'd still have a problem with it if they were fierce human bitches, you know?

I don't actually disagree. I'm glad Buffy, etc. are equally as physically strong as Angel, etc. But I guess in those types of situations, where they're evenly matched in a physical sense, I would prefer that the women have the edge of emotional power. Does that make sense? (lol, I'm greedy?)
