Fun with data!

I am still working on my Mockingjay/whole trilogy review, but we are at 1,600 words and no end in sight, so... might be a while.

In the meantime, let's have some fun with Google Analytics!

I never used Google Analytics on LJ, but I started using it with DW shortly after I started posting here. Since mid-September, I've had visitors from 325 cities in 35 countries and 39 U.S. states. (Why you be hatin', Midwest?) The vast majority of hits are concentrated in North America and Europe, but I've had visitors from every single continent, except the frozen one. (Why you be hatin', penguins?) The top ten countries with the most visits are:

1. United States
2. United Kingdom
3. Australia
4. Netherlands
5. Finland
6. Canada
7. Austria
8. France
9. Germany
10. Sweden

And the top ten states:

1. Maryland
2. Pennsylvania
3. District of Columbia
4. Texas
5. New York
6. Oklahoma
7. California
8. Illinois
9. Washington
10. Virginia

Knowing where my friends live, that's not terribly surprising, for the most part. But who are all these people in the DC metro area who are reading my journal and I don't know who you are? Let's be friends!

I've also noticed that traffic via search engine has increased significantly in the last month or so, so let's take a tour of the search terms! The most common ones are "next_to_normal dreamwidth" or some variation (is someone too lazy to use bookmarks? lol), but the real fun is in the less obvious search terms:

• weyrwolfen (that's random...)
• "worst guardian ever" jenna
• damon/stefan/elena threesome
• erica strange "focus focus focus"
• humanization in the musical camelot
• james marsters "where does he live?" (hey, STALKER)
• list fifteen of your favorite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot
• livejournal six feet under picspam
• next to normal meme (okay, so I guess we know what I'm known for, lol)
• pointless uses of technology
• site: dreamwidth.org google analytics (weird...)
  
• zachary levi as harry dresden (OMG now I want this so badly)
• quote from "next to normal" (presumably the musical, although I like to think I'm somewhat quotable, too)

Nothing quite as scandalous as gabrielleabelle's keyword list (fryal porno FTW) but I am still amused.

How do you get the list of states? I could only find "city," "country," "continent," "subcontinent/territory."

I've posted my own list of search terms, although yours is better - you talk about a wider range of things than I do.

When you have the list by country, you can click on the United States and it'll give you the detailed list by state (and then you can click on each state to get the list of cities in that state). The US is the only one you can do that with, though. All the others go right from country to city (I guess provinces don't count?).

(Random anecdote: When I first started using Analytics, I was baffled because it kept registering hits from my city, even though I'd set it not to count me. Eventually I realized that it was YOU, same city, different state!)

I get way more bizarre and X-rated keywords on my fic archive than I do on my journal!
