This is sort of random, but I wanted to make note of this NY Times article I read (it's from before Christmas, but I've been busy, okay?) about the dearth of live entertainment tailored to the holiday season. It caught my attention specifically because I'd been racking my brain for something holiday-themed to feature in my Musical Sunday posts and coming up entirely blank. I've already talked about Rent, and even that's only sort of centered around Christmas, but it's not really about Christmas, you know?

There's A Christmas Carol, of course, and the Radio City Christmas show, both of which I've seen in the past. And religious groups sometimes put on Nativity plays. But considering the overabundance of Christmas movies (and cheesy TV movies and TV shows' "holiday specials"), it surprises me how rare it is to find live theater appropriate for the holidays. Granted, a Broadway production usually needs to run longer than the holiday season in order to be profitable, but I don't see why smaller theaters couldn't do more festive - and original, because God knows there are enough versions of A Christmas Carol out there - productions this time of year.

Did any of your local theaters put on a Christmas (or holiday of your choosing) production this year? My neighborhood theater is currently showing Sunset Boulevard, which I would very much like to see, but it's not exactly the thing to get you in the Christmas spirit, you know? lol
