next_to_normal: (original musical)
Okay, I don't know how this happened. Well, actually, I do. I have a friend with the Broadway channel on satellite radio, and she keeps discovering these new musicals, and then getting me hooked on them. This is one that I've never seen, but the soundtrack is pretty awesome. And I'm a little shocked that it's so addictive, because it's about pre-teen angst, and that is SO not my thing. The show is called 13 and features the only all-teen Broadway cast. It's the story of 13-year-old Evan Goldman, whose parents are getting a divorce, and he and his mother are moving from New York City to Appleton, Indiana. He's got to start over in a new school and make new friends, and with his bar mitzvah right around the corner, he's feeling the pressure of becoming a man.

As much as I think pre-teen angst is silly, something about this show gets to me, because I was SO THERE when I was that age. And at least they're self-aware: "One day I'll be thirty. One day I'll be fine. One day I'll make fun of this dramatic life of mine." It's a show about growing up, making friends, fitting in, learning from your mistakes, and discovering who you really are.
