Yes, I still watch Lost!

FINAL SEASON YOU GUYS. We're on the home stretch now! Whee!
So, I guess we're going with the "have your cake and eat it, too" theory of storytelling, since we get BOTH outcomes from setting off the bomb. One where it seems to have blasted the characters back to the present, but did not reset time so they'd never come to the island at all, the way Jack was hoping it would; and another where it seems that did happen, and the plane lands safely in LA.
First things first: Damn you, Show. That was mean, teasing us with the hope that Juliet might have survived, only to kill her off as soon as Sawyer found her. Totally unnecessary and cruel - particularly since I'm halfway through the season and EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER seems to have popped up in the alt-verse except Juliet. Why do you hate me, Show?
Kind of enjoying angry!Sawyer, though. I was hoping he'd make good on his promise to kill Jack. Alas.
Annnd, they've been captured by the Others. AGAIN. This time in the much talked-about Temple. Oh, hey, look! It's Cindy the flight attendant! Glad to see you again, Cindy. Nice to know you're not dead.
What happened to the water in the Temple? Is it not working because Jacob is dead? And now Sayid's possibly a zombie? (LOL, didn't I suggest that back in Season 3?) I do sympathize with Sawyer, though, that SO MANY PEOPLE on this show get resurrected and not Juliet. JULIET WAS AWESOME. SHE DESERVED TO LIVE.
Hahaha! Claire has turned into Rousseau. Awesome.
This whole arc kind of annoyed me, because it reminded me too much of season 3. The "kidnapped by the Others" thing felt repetitive and the characters seemed to be mostly spinning their wheels until things got moving with Locke's group. They introduced this whole new group of Others and all this focus on Dogen and Lennon and the Temple, only to kill them off within a few episodes and none of it really mattered anyway.
On the other side of the island, we have Locke thinning out the supporting cast again. Bram's trick with the ash was pretty interesting, though. I'm assuming that's the same ash that was in a circle around Jacob's house, which keeps the Man in Black/smoke monster out? When Team Jacob got to the cabin, they noticed the circle had been broken - but has it been broken all this time? The MiB (as Christian) appeared in the house three years ago, before all the time travel and such. And when Ben took Locke there the first time, was it Jacob that asked Locke to help him, or the MiB?
So, once Locke has killed off everyone without a speaking part on that side of the island, he comes over to the Temple to kill some more people.
Here's the major lapse in logic that I don't understand. If the Man in Black can't kill Jacob, then why on earth would Jacob keep bringing OTHER PEOPLE to the island? It was only a matter of time before the MiB figured out the loophole and had one of them kill Jacob. And the whole "candidates" thing seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy - the candidates are meant to replace Jacob, but if the candidates had never come to the island, the MiB couldn't have killed Jacob, so Jacob wouldn't NEED someone to take his place.
Still not sure which side Widmore's on. Clearly not Locke's, but is he trying to fulfill whatever Jacob wanted, or just on his own little side mission here? He did used to be an Other, but then he got banished, so maybe not so much on the loyalty to Jacob.
Speaking of loyalty, let me see if I've got this straight - Sawyer, Kate, Sayid, Claire, Jin (sort of against his will) and a bunch of Others are with Locke, except that Sawyer also made a deal with Widmore and then Jin gets captured by Widmore, who also has Desmond (noooooo!).
Meanwhile, Jack, Hurley, Sun, Lapidus, Miles, Ilana, Ben, and Richard are... playing hot potato with the leadership role, lol. Ilana's all, "Jacob said Richard's in charge," and Richard's like, "Sorry, kinda busy having an existential crisis over here!" and Jack's all, "Don't look at me, I'm tired of that shit," and Sun is like, "WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE JUST MAKE A DECISION? I WOULD LIKE TO FIND MY HUSBAND SOMETIME THIS CENTURY." And then Hurley's all, "Geez, do I have to do EVERYTHING myself?" (Yes, Hurley. Yes, you do, because you're the only one who has any common sense left.)
Finally! Richard flashback - I cannot tell you how long I've been waiting for that one. Except I am seriously distracted by the apparent absence of the laws of physics here. How does a wooden ship destroy a ginormous STONE STATUE? Does. Not. Compute. But hey! We now have one more vote for the "they're already dead" theory. Thanks, Richard!
So, the whole flash sideways thing. It's kind of fun and nostalgic to see everybody together again on the plane (Boone! It's Boone! Hi, Boone!). And the six degrees of separation thing is still in effect, since the characters all seem to be running into each other after the plane has landed. There are clearly way more differences than just the plane not crashing, though. Since we know Jacob was intervening in their lives in order to bring them to the island, I guess this is what their lives would have been like without Jacob's influence? Most of them seem to be better off, which doesn't exactly put Jacob in the "good guy" category.
Let's see: Jack is still a downer, but he has a son with whom to work through his daddy issues. Kate escapes from custody and makes a weird connection with Claire. Locke is happy with Peg Bundy, though still paralyzed (and yet, Helen mentioned Locke's father like they were friendly - if he didn't push Locke out a window, how did he get paralyzed in this timeline?). Hurley considers himself the luckiest man alive. Sawyer's a cop (with Miles! I would totally watch a buddy cop show starring Josh Holloway and Ken Leung) instead of a con man. Jin and Sun are not married, but seem to have a healthier relationship because of it (up until she gets shot, of course). Ben has a much better relationship with his father and gets a chance to sacrifice his own ambitions for Alex, reversing his choice on the island. (I would also totally watch a show about Ben teaching European History, lol. )
Sayid seems to have drawn the short straw, where Nadia is alive but married to his brother. Awkward. He also seems destined to be a killer no matter what timeline he's in. Sucks to be Sayid, I guess. I'm assuming this has some relation to him being "infected" or whatever by Smokey. Claire was also infected, though, and she seemed all right in the alt-verse.
Other than setting up some hilarious spin-off shows, though, I'm not sure what the purpose of the sideways flashes IS exactly. Are the two timelines going to collapse back into one at some point? Or do the characters get to choose which one they want to live in? Or is one of them just a really bizarre dream? ("And you were there, and you, and you...") Hahaha, I just realized that I completely gave up on trying to keep track of all the questions I had and whether they got answered, waaay back in Season 3. Which is probably for the best, lol.

RICHARRRRRD MY LOOOOOVE. Favourite character of the season, srsly.
No wait, I lied. BOONE IS MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER OF THE SEASON. HIS CAMEOS MAKE MY LIFE WORTH LIVING.
The Ben and Sawyer/Miles Sideways stories were my favourites, too. <3333
Sayid seems to have drawn the short straw, where Nadia is alive but married to his brother. Awkward. He also seems destined to be a killer no matter what timeline he's in. Sucks to be Sayid, I guess.
I'm sorry, but this made me literally LOL.

Date: May. 24th, 2011 05:43 pm (UTC)BOOOOOOOOONE!! It cracks me up how all my favorite characters are the ones who weren't in most of the series.
I am kind of cranky about Sayid, though. I mean, he was one of my favorites early on, and zombie!Sayid is totally lame.
