Neverwhere, by Neil Gaiman. Full disclosure: I have been "reading" this since Christmas.
I know exactly what you mean. I've been doing the same with American Gods. (I started reading it last summer.) It's a really good book, it's just hard to get through because of his style of writing. But I have read/listened to Neverwhere and it's wonderful. I have the unabridged preferred author's text audio book for Neverwhere. I bought it because it's read by Neil Gaiman. (And oh my God, that man's voice...I could listen to him read a grocery list.) Anyway, it is definitely worth it if you make it through the book.
