*sigh* I have a complicated relationship with Fringe. I will grant them that they've done well with drawing out the plot and keeping things fresh and also coherent, but I feel like in the process, they've dropped the ball on the characters. Which probably has a lot to do with the way it keeps re-inventing itself, because they're not just starting fresh with the plot arcs - they also frequently are starting over with different versions of the characters. The existing character arc gets wiped away, or buried, or mixed up with a completely different arc we didn't actually see, and it blunts the emotional resonance for me.

The jump to the future is the point when I quit watching, not because the plot was bad (although I found the war with the Observers to be less compelling than the conflict between the two universes), but because I realized I just didn't care about these characters anymore. The versions I'd found most interesting had been obliterated.

I can get invested in characters even if I don't care about the plot. It's nearly impossible to get invested in a plot when I don't care about the characters.
