Hmmm, after this week's episode, I'm feeling pretty good about it? Because clearly they REALLY REALLY get Elena, and are deliberately writing her the way we've been reading her. I mean, everything she was saying is practically verbatim what we've been writing meta about. And in order for Elena's arc to make ANY kind of sense, she has to move on from Stefan and all that he represents.
I don't think Elena will be "with Damon" the way she was with Stefan, because D/E isn't like that. But I think we're heading into an extended period where S/E is broken up, Damon or no Damon.
