So, I was all set to do reaction posts this year, and then the season premiere was so godawful boring that I couldn't be fucked. It felt like they were just checking the boxes on what we expected to happen - Elena in transition? Check! Damon is pissed at Stefan? Check! Matt feels guilty? Check! Bonnie does a spell? Check! - without putting any effort into making it interesting for the audience. And I was all, "What happened to my shooooooow?" and resolved to watch the rest of the season drunk off my ass.

AND THEN THIS HAPPENED.

Thank you, Twitter. That about sums it up. Seriously, whoever wrote this episode is a glorious troll. Not just Damon, though he was in rare form last night. But the deliberate subverting of Stelena was balm to my soul after the whole "let's pretend season 3 didn't happen" thing from last week. I mean, obviously the characters are still pretending it didn't happen, and that troubles me deeply, for Elena's sake (lol what is a Stefan?), but at least there are clear signs that all is not rainbows and puppies again with Stefan and Elena. Damon calling out Stefan as delusional for forcing the bunny diet on her, Elena VOMITING post-makeout session, and then hiding her digestive problems from him and going to Caroline and Damon for help?

(But whatever it does right, Stelena is the one thing this show seems to consistently fail on, so... not getting my hopes up.)

But, speaking of Caroline, YES THIS IS WHAT I WANTED.

Caroline is really the best equipped to get Elena through this, and I am SO glad she is the one who, in the end, really helps. Stefan and Damon project their baggage all over Elena, making it all about themselves and their rivalry, but Caroline made it about Elena, getting Elena to use her much talked about compassion as a guide instead of trying to suppress it. (Lord knows Elena doesn't need any more excuses to hide her emotions.)

And then Tyler, with that speech about becoming part of a team, while literally taking one for his team? BLESS. Tyler's never been fully integrated into the group until now, because he's always had his own shit to deal with, but he's defeated his demons and come out stronger on the other side. And, because it is this show, I am now terrified that they'll kill him off for good, since his arc has reached a sort of conclusion.

What is that group therapy session at the end? LMFAO. I know it's supposed to be a serious moment and all, but I just can't get over the fact that half of the people they mentioned were killed by Damon. (Petty!Stefan is my favorite Stefan. After Ripper!Stefan, of course.) So Damon storms off and has his own pity party at Alaric's grave. AND THEN THE GROSS SOBBING HAPPENED.

HE MISSES HIS DRINKING BUDDY. TAKING CARE OF THE KIDS. A BIRTHDAY I'M PRETTY SURE IS WRONG. ALARIC MISSES HIM, TOO.

Other awesome things:
* "Am I wearing my 'I Blew Up the Council' T-shirt?"
* Elena feeding from Damon, obvs. HOT OMG.
* Elena vomiting up blood all over herself and the bathroom. Gross, but nice imagery.
* The return of Damon Salvatore, fashion consultant.
* "Also, if he shows his face, I'm gonna kick his ass."
* Damon and the holy water.
* Elena feeding from Matt IN CHURCH, NOT AT ALL INCONSPICUOUSLY.
* The doppelganger blood theory, because you know who they can ask about it? KATHERINE. COME BACK TO ME.

Basically: YES YES ALL MY BBS DOING WONDERFUL THINGS. Or being petty Salvatores.

Er, except Bonnie: "You came here because you needed something, right?" = Bonnie's entire role on this show in one sentence. I keep hoping that the fact that they're acknowledging it means they're going to go somewhere with it, but if so, it's the slowest moving arc ever.

Also, NO ORIGINALS. HEY YOU GUYS I THINK I JUST FIGURED OUT WHY THIS EP WAS SO GREAT.
