I'm sure we've had this conversation before, but I always forget that this is a Kevin Williamson show! I don't know why. Maybe because it's good? (ooh, burn) No, I did like Dawson's Creek for at least a few seasons, but they definitely Dragged. Stuff. Out.
I think the "taking themselves too seriously" thing is probably pretty accurate for high school romances. I know that when I was in high school, everything seemed dire and every relationship hiccup was the end of the world. It's just not very fun to watch from the other side of 21, you know? (And what's Stefan's excuse? He's only pretending to be in high school!)
Yeah, I am curious why Katherine had to fake her own death. I suppose there has to be a Bigger Bad out there than her, if the show's going to last past the second season. :)
