Musical Sunday!
Jul. 18th, 2010 08:53 pmSince my parents were here this weekend (is it bad to sigh with relief that they're gone? lol, I love them, but they're exhausting and they keep me from doing important things like my homework and working out), I figured it would be appropriate to feature my mom's favorite musical - Camelot.
We went to see it when I was in middle school, at the same playhouse where my middle school drama club used to go for competitions. This is perhaps my first shipping experience, as I firmly believed that Arthur and Guenevere belonged together and Lancelot was a poophead for screwing it all up. (I later read The Once and Future King, and I don't recall my opinion changing much.) I actually used to skip the sappy Guenevere/Lancelot love songs on the CD because I thought they were stupid. Arthur and Guenevere had much more fun songs.
These are my two favorites. First, "I Wonder What the King is Doing Tonight." I always loved the way they immediately humanized Arthur by showing that he was scared of his impending marriage ("He's wishing he were in Scotland FISHING tonight!"). Then he meets her and they like each other and it's so cute!
And then there's "Take Me To the Fair." Of course, I love Guenevere manipulating the knights into kicking Lancelot's ass. :) It amuses me how she's all gleeful, hearing how they're going to kill him. I might possibly have danced around with imaginary knights, singing this song as a child, but there's no proof of that. :)
