I tend to think that part of the problem is that he died before he had a chance to get notes from an editor. This book feels like it really, REALLY would have benefited from a serious editing job.
From the reviews, I got the impression that the movie was better in some ways, as it streamlined things a bit, but also did some bad things to make up for it, lol.
