That still doesn't explain his reaction in #35. Even if he thought he was saving the world with Twilight, by #35, it is obvious that they are in fact destroying it. Buffy is upset and refuses to abandon her friends and family. Angel... doesn't seem to care, and only agrees to help because Buffy insists on going back.
