But it continues to carry with it a strong assumption: namely that *the* way to tell any story about this material is to be serious. You rule out someone who might want to do a satire on that material, who might want to tell it the way the old series did -- which was a lot of fun for me as a kid, and so on.
*sigh* Clearly I shouldn't have gone with a tiny font for my Redundant Disclaimer. People respond to things differently. If someone else thinks that the Batman story is more suited to a humorous or satirical tone, they're certainly free to do that, and if that captures the source material for some people, they'll probably enjoy it. I wouldn't be one of them, but I never said my opinion was the only one that mattered.
I feel like you're trying to make this much more absolute than it is, Maggie, and I don't know what to say to you other than "people think differently." Some of us don't like the way the story's being told. Maybe it is exactly the way Joss wants it to be told. That doesn't change the fact that I don't like it.
It doesn't matter to me whether Joss is being serious or whether he's mocking on purpose. I don't like the tone. It doesn't feel like Buffy to me, and no amount of other people telling me "NO BUT IT IS YOU'RE JUST READING IT WRONG" is going to change how I react to it.
I also don't get what the big deal is with talking about Promethea. You seem to be violently opposed to any type of comparison, and I don't really understand why. What's wrong with saying, "Hey, here's a comic with really beautiful art and a cool story, which I like so much better than season 8"? I think for most of us, having a point of comparison helps to illustrate what about season 8 is not working. I know for me, seeing flake_sake's comparison of the space fucking really brought home the failure of Jeanty's art. I disliked those scenes from the moment I saw them, but seeing something I liked better helped me articulate why I disliked it and what could have been changed to make it more appealing to me.
