Yeah, I had heard the thing about Maura Tierney. Apparently, when they recast the role, they actually went back and reshot a LOT of the pilot, making it much more of a comedy and eliminating some of the darker elements. I haven't seen the original, so I can't judge, but from what I've heard, it seems the new pilot was an improvement.
