Spike has two doors!

Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll. It was kind of a trick question. :) No lie...
slaymesoftly and I thought we were going crazy. She was sure the door was wood, which it certainly looks like in these screencaps:

But I remembered the outside view from "Dead Things," in which Spike's door looks (to me) like weathered stone, though it could also be metal:

Also note the door has windows, with what looks like opaque glass and metal lattice.
On the inside, it's pretty dark, so it's hard to tell what the door looks like, but there's definitely no window:

Once Spike goes outside, the window is back, plus a cute little door handle that is distinctly different from the handle in OMWF (see above):

Patti and I were ready to call it sloppy set design and assume that no attempt had been made to match the doors on the exterior crypt set and the interior crypt set. Until we saw this:

Two doors!! An outer one (which I'm still not sure what it's made of) with the lattice windows and a cute little doorknob, and an inner one, which is solid and looks to be wooden. How is it that no one's noticed this before? And what kind of crack was the person who built this crypt smoking? Unless Spike installed the second door himself, why on earth would a crypt need a double door?
But I think the most significant thing about this discovery is that it puts the "Dead Things" door scene in a whole new perspective. Y'all thought they had some kind of connection, didn't ya? Well, turns out they were making love to different doors! lol
I wonder if that's supposed to be a metaphor for their relationship or something...
Oh, and one more for the conspiracy theorists - in "As You Were," Spike's crypt door definitely opens backwards. What do you suppose that means? ;)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go rewrite all my scenes in Spike's crypt to account for his double doors...

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2008 03:34 am (UTC)But I could swear that there have been a few times where Buffy has kicked in the door to Spike's crypt (from the outside) and it the immediate following shot is inside, with the door being kicked open. Does this mean she kicks both doors open? Or does she politely open the first door and kick open the second door? You have certainly unearthed a mystery here

*Snerk* *LOL* *Snerk*
heee, so I guess we all were a little right. and that makes Spuffy a bit more twisted than we're used to.

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2008 10:33 am (UTC)On the subject of doors, I am *sure* I saw Buffy's front door open the other way in one episode, in season 1 or 2... I just can't remember when but I remember it shocked me.
And yes, why would a crypt need two doors.. *is puzzled*

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2008 03:06 pm (UTC)Maybe having two doors is a measure of security - anyone wanting to break in would have to get through both (though it doesn't seem to stop Buffy, lol).

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2008 12:28 pm (UTC)Why on earth would a crypt need to be that big, LOL? I suppose if you've got money to build a crypt as big as a small apartment (with only one apparent sarcophagus), you also do it with an entryway.
I wonder if that's supposed to be a metaphor for their relationship or something...
Like... 1. There's always space between them and they can never truly connect. 2. Oops, we forgot about the doors while filming this.

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2008 03:09 pm (UTC)Another excellent question. Maybe it was supposed to be a family crypt, but the rest of the family ended up being buried somewhere else? I also wonder if the lower level is supposed to be part of the crypt, or if there just happens to be an underground cavern beneath the crypt (in which case, I'm surprised the weight of the building didn't cave it in).

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2008 02:25 pm (UTC)LOL... It really doesn't make any sense the two doors thing! But I think Spike installed the second one, I think it was in "Something Blue" that we see the crypt (where the scoobies are attacked by the demons) that would eventually become Spike's and I think by then it only had one door... maybe...
