Well all righty then

BIG announcement today. This is all still rather speculative, but it seems like fairly solid spoilers for Captain America 3, the Civil War arc in the comics, and probably Avengers 3 and/or 4, so no clicky if you don't want to know.
Looks like RDJ will be appearing in Captain America 3, which will also launch the Civil War storyline in the MCU. I guess that's what he meant last week when he was all, "No Iron Man 4, but I will be doing ~other stuff~."
I am not surprised that they're doing Civil War, although I am a little surprised at how soon they're doing it? Marvel still doesn't own the film rights to several major players (most notably Spider-Man, but also the Fantastic Four and X-Men), and I figured they'd try to hold off until they got at least one or two of those properties back.
On the other hand, that likely means they're taking the general idea of Civil War but telling a rather different story - which is probably a good thing, considering Civil War was much better in theory than it was in execution.
But perhaps more importantly, the emotional core of the story, the reason the Civil War cuts so deep, is because Steve and Tony have a such a huge history between them. This is a Steve and Tony who have been best friends for over a decade, who have worked together and led the Avengers together and been partners who developed an incredible amount of trust in each other. IDK, I'm sure they'll build up their relationship in Age of Ultron, but I can't imagine it having the same impact in the MCU without all that weight behind it.
(Also, WHAT ABOUT BUCKY. He didn't get nearly as much of an arc in Cap 2 as one would expect from a movie subtitled "The Winter Soldier," and I think we were all assuming Cap 3 would be about ultimately bringing Bucky in. But if it's gonna be all Steve vs. Tony, plus potentially Steve having a whole Avengers team of his own, that doesn't leave much room for a Bucky arc.)
Speaking of which, is it just me or does it feel like Cap keeps getting shafted a bit when it comes to so-called "solo" films? Cap 2 was a LOT of SHIELD, and now Cap 3 is going to be basically Avengers 2.5? I wonder if this is a reflection of the limited story ideas they have for the character (which, IMO, means they're just not trying, but Chris Evans and Kevin Feige and others have talked about how supposedly hard it is to make Cap interesting because he's such a good guy), or if it's just coincidence that it works out that way. The Iron Man and Thor solo films have been much more stand-alone in nature, and while I enjoy the crossover aspect and Natasha basically being co-lead of CATWS, I do feel like there's an awful lot about Steve that we're not getting because his movies have to make room for these big universe shifts, and Bucky is just one example of that.
OR MAYBE I'M BIASED BECAUSE STEVE'S MY FAAAAAAAVORITE. #sorry not sorry
Presumably, this will at some point (Avengers 4?) end the same way Civil War did, since people have been talking about killing MCU Steve basically since Crossbones and Sharon were announced for Cap 2. If Marvel is shelling out $40 million for RDJ, I have to believe they can make a deal with Chris Evans, too. So I'm not TOO worried about my bb yet, but I will be very sad if he doesn't come back at some point.
AND NOW I AM GOING TO BED.

Mhm, agreed.

Date: Oct. 16th, 2014 06:56 pm (UTC)I mean, none of them have secret identities to be compromised anymore, except maybe the Maximoffs, depending how they're handled. And there really aren't that many superheroes in the MCU - it seems kind of silly to have a "civil war" over a law to regulate, what? Maybe a dozen people? Half of whom used to work for the government anyway. They basically already HAD registration in the MCU - it was called SHIELD, and it just blew up pretty spectacularly.
I'm guessing that the new Civil War is going to be over how to fill the SHIELD vacuum, with Steve opposing any new government agency ("This is how it ends - everything goes") and Tony, fresh off his Ultron failure, insisting that they need somebody to regulate things because, as terrible as the WSC and SHIELD may have been, it beats almost accidentally annihilating the human race with your sentient robot army.
