If I started to feel sad or feel like I had to twist his arm to get him to do something nice for me on mother's day, I'd have to take a step back and see what's happened to our relationship.
That's a good point... and it's probably worth noting that I'm more bothered by my dad not doing anything than my mom is. (Although partly, I think she's just resigned herself to the fact that he is not a good gift-giver. Even the holidays when he buys something - birthday, Christmas - he usually needs some guidance.) But since I am far away and I'm not always around to do something for my mom, I feel like someone should do something special.
