This is probably why I ship them too.

Certainly accounts for my favourite D/K scene being the one where she destroys his illusions with a simple lie, destroys him like he could never hurt her -- I never loved you. It was always Stefan.

I don't know. When Damon says it, it's a blatant lie that Katherine can see through, not in the least because he did do it for her (die for her). But Katherine, alas, is a much better liar than Damon is -- and she's already broken his heart.
