Awesome Ladies, Day 9

Yikes! I only have up to Day 10 finished and ready to go. I guess I ought to get on that. And I have Lost season 3 finale thoughts! And a cooking post! Or, you know, I could do some actual work (work work AND school work) that I've been putting off forever.

In completely unrelated news, pls to be signing my petition expanding the calendar day to 30 hours so that I have enough time to fit everything in (and maybe possibly also sleep).

Day Nine: Favorite female character in a drama show
Peggy Olsen, Debra Morgan, Michelle Dessler

These three are basically all runners-up from previous days, before I said fuck it and started throwing in as many characters as I could think of, lol. Peggy totally fits in the "male-driven show" category, and I love her for a lot of the same reasons I love CJ. She's kind of what I expect CJ would be like if she'd been of an earlier generation. Her transformation over the last four seasons of Mad Men has been astonishing, and she stands out as a sign of things to come, while the other female characters (Joan and Betty in particular) remain trapped in the previous era. And yet, it's still eye-opening to realize that some of the situations Peggy finds herself in haven't really changed at all.

Deb could easily have been my "hated but grew to love" character. I mean, I really hated Deb when I first started watching Dexter. She started off dumb and obnoxious (which I gather was closer to the book characterization?), and then was inconsistent for a while as she seemed to become more mature and competent over the course of each season, only to revert back to the old Deb at the beginning of the next. In the last two seasons, though, Jennifer Carpenter has been turning in some top-notch performances, and Deb has really grown on me.

24 has an unpleasant habit of fridging its female characters, but Michelle's death was by far the most devastating for me. (That whole season was traumatic, because we lost several of my favorite characters.) I loved Michelle. I loved her competency, I loved her bravery, I loved her kick-assitude (again with the guns!), and I particularly loved her relationship with Tony. They had their bumps in the road, but overall, they seemed to provide a strong counterpoint to Jack, who was like relationship kryptonite. Look, kids! You really can save the world AND have a relationship at the same time! Except... not so much. Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted. You were awesome, Michelle.
