Oops, I did it again

Another meme, this one snagged from [livejournal.com profile] maharet83.
Post the first line of the last 25 fics you wrote and try to find a pattern.

Jesus, I had to go back to 2007 to come up with 25 fics, which is somewhat depressing when you consider that I've only been posting since 2007, and I've written 43 fics total. I've excluded the drabbles I wrote for the First Line Meme, since the whole point of that meme was that someone else wrote the first line, so it would likely skew the results.

1. Ebbing of the Tide: “Buffy, it’s started.”

2. When in Rome
: Spike stared after Andrew as the door closed behind him, wondering how Andrew had managed to convince not one, but two women that he was straight.

3. Slay Bells: “It’s just not right,” Buffy said, taking in the inexplicable sight before her.

4. Thaw: You’re a little bit relieved when you find out it’s just her.

5. Accept No Substitutes: “I don’t understand,” Spike moped from his perch at the foot of Willow’s bed.

6. Closure: “This Film Theory class was a total mistake,” Buffy complained over the rock music blaring from the speakers.

7. Similarity: “Is there anything I can do?”

8. Seeing Things: There’s a moment, as the door closes behind Buffy and Dawn, leaving them alone in his apartment, when he wishes he could kill Spike.

9. Heated Debate: “What’s on TV?” Dawn plopped down on the sofa next to Willow.

10. Life Lessons: “Hey,” Buffy said without enthusiasm, shutting the front door behind her before she tossed her stakes on the small table in the foyer.

11. Denial: “I guess Angel’s back to his normal self again, eh?” Doyle asked, startling Cordelia as she emerged from downstairs.

12. He Will Come For Me: Buffy stared at the neatly lettered calligraphy and wondered briefly if she’d lost her mind.

13. The Worst Day Since Yesterday: Spike stalked through the UC Sunnydale campus, resigned to being a creature of the darkness once again.

14. Escape: Everything hurts.

15. Anyone Else
: She closed her eyes and tried to pretend she was fucking anyone else but him.

16. Nineteen Days: They spent the first night at a Motel 6, twenty miles from the crater.

17. Now Comes the Night: He’d never seen a thing as gaudy as this trinket Angel’d brought, and yet it mesmerized him, dangling from his hand, reflecting the bits of moonlight that came through the window.

18. Stairs: It took a while to pry him away from the party, what with him drooling all over Buffy and practically fanging out every time that Richard guy opened his mouth, but she finally managed to get a minute alone with Spike in the kitchen as he rooted around in the refrigerator for more beer.

19. Overextending the Metaphor: “When we were younger, my parents used to take us to this seafood restaurant,” Buffy explained.

20. ...And They All Lived Happily Ever After: “Okay, guys,” Buffy said, addressing the group of Slayers and assorted Scoobies assembled in the control room of Slayer Central.

21. Variations on a Theme 1
: “Seriously, Dawn,” Buffy said, looking around her sister’s messy bedroom. “You have to stop leaving your dirty dishes in your room. That’s why we have a dishwasher.”

22. Variations on a Theme 2
: Buffy came out of the kitchen and stood in the doorway of the living room, where Dawn was sprawled on the sofa watching TV.

23. Something in Common
: “So, how old are you?” Dawn asked, as they perched on the steps of the Hyperion’s ruined grand staircase.

24. A Toast: “What have we learned from this exercise?”

25. Tell Her This: He had pictured the moment a thousand times, a thousand different ways, but never in any of his imaginings had he smelled like a Chaos demon when it happened.

Patterns. Well, 13 of them start with dialogue, which is a slim majority. Most of them introduce the main character(s) of the fic in some way - although, to be fair, a lot of them are drabbles, so it's not like there are (a) a lot of characters and (b) a lot of space for introductions. Hardly any of them give you a good sense of what the fic's about, though, which is maybe a bad thing, I don't know. Some of them give clues as to the setting or time frame of the fic.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Makes me want to go read everything you're written that I haven't read yet.

Am I surprised? Not really...

^_^

Hey, whatever happened to [livejournal.com profile] clawofcat? I was randomly thinking about her yesterday...

Cos her LJ says last time she updated was end of 2009.

Lady Gaga? O_o

I need to go outside in the cold wind to hang my washing while there's still a bit of blue sky out there. Then I'll warm my hands up doing the dishes, much better this way around!!

Hmmm - thinking about doing this, but not sure how to come up with the last twenty-five. Can remember the latest four or five, maybe, but twenty-five? In order? Sounds like a lot of work.

*nods* I'd say few of them give you a sense of what the fic's about, but I don't know if that's a bad thing in fanfic. Your readers already know who the characters are likely to be, and there's probably been a short summary, right? I'm a big fan of starting a story with dialogue that puts us right into the scene, but in the above selections, I think I like some of the none-dialogue openings better. Tell Her This, Stairs, Seeing Things and Thaw specifically. They seem to set a mood for the following story.

I suppose I could. I'd be missing the non-spuffy ones, but I could always fill those in from LJ. There wouldn't be that many.
