Hiya, folks. I took a week off from work and my mom treated me to a lovely and relaxing vacation in Williamsburg for my birthday, which is why I've been MIA lately.

Pre-emptive thank yous for the birthday wishes! I know I saw a few, but I have a zillion tabs open so it may be a while before I get around to them individually. (I'm considering it a stress test for Firefox. How many tabs can I open before it crashes? And how many of those tabs can be gif-laden FMM posts before my computer curls up and dies?)

(Speaking of which, I am SO SAD that I was away for FMM. I did manage to get online a few times and voting was one of my top priorities, lol, but I am now trolling through comments and snagging ALL THE GIFS. Also, LESLIE KNOPE FTW. MAKE IT HAPPEN, YOU GUYS.)

SO. Tell me what you've been up to! Oh, but no spoilers! I have not seen any TV since last week (including tonight's TVD), so shhhhh.

Now with even more bruising and three times the mucus!

Well, I had to do something to top the Thanksgiving table mishap, right?

Anyway, happy new year! Hope everyone had a lovely seasonal and/or religious holiday of your choice. I'm delighted to come back and see so many people now crossposting from DW (I like to think it was my persuasive post that convinced y'all), and I've had SO MUCH to catch up on that I've been reading/commenting sporadically, but I definitely welcome recs if I missed something devastatingly interesting.

Hiya, folks. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving (or, outside the U.S., a totally normal Thursday). Mine was... action-packed. Which is perhaps why it's been a week since I last posted. I needed time to recover.

Hey hey hey! Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes (I think I got around to them all, but if I didn't, please let me know! I'm not hatin' - just overwhelmed, lol.)

As you may know, this week is Spring Break for me, so I took the opportunity to take a week off from work, since I had no classes. It was supposed to be relaxing yet productive, but if I wanted to relax, I probably shouldn't have bought a house, you know? I've just about got the mortgage stuff straightened out (after a minor "OMG this is so expensive, what was I THINKING???" freakout earlier today), and I'm having the home inspection done on Friday.

I did manage to have some fun this weekend, since the oh-so-Irish [personal profile] mcmegan came to visit and we went to the Shamrock Fest in DC. Lots of Irish bands, lots of people in crazy outfits, and a LOT of fried food (my stomach was not pleased), but the main attractions were Hotspur - Megan's like a superfan or something, they know her by name! - and Dropkick Murphys, both of which were great.

We also got our picture taken with a leprechaun:

And now for the rest of my holiday adventures, which are so numerous and awesome that they required TWO whole posts (my therapist would be so proud)!

Hey, long time no see! It's been a busy week - once again, I need a vacation from my vacation. I am so glad I took this week off from work, but it wasn't exactly the most restful time!

We ended up getting about six inches of snow on Sunday, which torpedoed my plans to go to the Flyers' practice with Megan. Fortunately, I got out of shoveling, because my dad was awake at 5 am (as always) and decided to shovel the whole driveway before my mother and I were even awake. His reasoning? "I was up. What else was there to do?" My mother said, "You could've at least waited until the SUN came up, you know."

I did get to see Megan on Monday and exchange gifts (yay!), and then that night my mom and I went to see This is the Week That Is, which is an annual comedy/improv show about current events and politics and such. Musical + politics = totally up my alley, so this is the third time I've gone. And this year... I was IN the show. They always do a couple of skits where they bring an audience member up on stage. This year, they'd decided they were frustrated with current party politics and were going to start a new outsider political party, so they needed someone to lead it. And they picked me!

It was awesome and hilarious, because they asked me where I live and what I do for a living, and according to my mother, the looks on their faces when I said I was a lobbyist in Washington were like, "OMG this is too good to be true." But then when I told them I lobbied for musicians, I became the only audience member to ever get their own theme music. \o/ My mom (and the cast) said I was great and didn't seem nervous at all. I like to think that my five years spent in drama club were not in vain, lol.

Anyway, Tuesday we drove back to Virginia at the crack of dawn and came home to a slightly traumatized Chelsea. She saw my dad come in the door first, and she hissed at him! She's only ever hissed at Patches! Fortunately, he interpreted it as her being a good little watch cat, scaring away strangers. :) She was all clingy as usual - she doesn't like it when I go away for several days at a time, and you can tell she missed me because she actually slept under the covers in bed with me. Usually she just lays on top. But I gave her a catnip toy and all was forgiven. (Adorable pictures forthcoming, as soon as my camera charges.)

Chelsea is, of course, much smarter than Patches, who got the same toy, but seemed to have no idea what to do with it. Patches did like the toy my mother got for her, but for some bizarre reason, she only played with it when no one was watching. We'd hear the ball going around the track, but when we went to investigate, as soon as she spotted us, she'd immediately stop. This led to several instances of us hiding behind doors or around corners, peeking out to see her playing with it, and then ducking back around so she wouldn't see us, hands over our mouths to keep from laughing out loud. :)

While my parents were here, we went to see the White House Christmas tree (kinda ugly - my mom said it looks like it's wearing a giant condom, lol) and ZooLights at the National Zoo (unimpressive, but I'm a bit spoiled by Longwood Gardens). We also had to take a ride around to see neighborhoods where I've seen condo listings, and of course we all like the most expensive one best.

This is already a bit long, so I'll save Kelly's and my wild adventures for tomorrow - again, hopefully with pictures! (Kelly, send me the ones you took on New Year's Eve and I'll post them up!)
next_to_normal: (Cordy red)
Hi hi! I am still at my parents' house, and by tomorrow will potentially be snowed in, if the weathermen can be believed. Though, considering how often they are wrong under normal circumstances, you know it's bad when even they admit they have no idea what's going on. (FYI, "The computer models may be flawed" is meteorologist for "We don't know what the hell is going on, but we're stocking up on canned goods.")

Anyway, Christmas was, overall, pretty good. Took me almost 5 hours to get home, and my mom and I actually went out shopping the morning of Christmas Eve because I was too lazy to go out and get gift cards for my cousins. :) We also stopped in PetSmart to buy cat toys (Patches, naturally, is way more interested in the plastic bag it came in than the toy itself) and to torture ourselves with how cute and sad the kitties there are.

My mom had been complaining about having to go to my aunt and uncle's for Christmas Eve this year, because they live an hour away and my parents have been going out there almost every weekend for Sunday dinners for over 20 years, and yet they act like it is SUCH a hardship to come to our house ONCE A YEAR for Christmas. My aunt is always asking to have it at their house, so this year, my mother reluctantly gave in, but sometime in the early afternoon, she realized how nice it was not to have to cook anything. :) Plus, my cousin got engaged last week, and so the future in-laws were also in attendance. It was our first time meeting them, and I actually really like them, even if our combined dietary requirements make meal planning into a bit of an obstacle (there's me with the Crohn's, my cousin doesn't eat cheese or red meat, my uncle doesn't eat fish, and the new fiancee and her father both have Celiac's).

My Christmas gifts went over pretty well, which always makes me happy. I'm one of those people who loves to get the perfect gift for everyone, which is why I spend so much time agonizing over it and hate to fall back on gift cards (even though I always end up getting them for a few people anyway). Object lesson in why I try to avoid such things: this year, my one aunt and I got each other Barnes and Noble gift cards for the exact same amount. It just seems kinda silly, you know?

As for me, I got mostly money and gift cards, clothes (from my fashion-conscious aunt who loves to buy me clothes because she wanted a girl to dress up but only had boys), and a box of groceries from my parents, lol.

For Christmas Day dinner, we went to my OTHER aunt's house, which was a much smaller gathering (my mom's side of the family is pathetically small), so most of the excitement came from my cousin's new dog (a little yippy thing that is cuter than the last one, but still kinda looks like a rat), who is violently opposed to sharing a house with Maude the Devil Cat (you can't really blame him, though, you know? No one wants to live with Maude) and makes his displeasure widely known.

We managed to get rid of my grandmother a full day early, because the weather reports scared her (she's afraid of snow, even though she doesn't have to drive in it), which made things much more peaceful around here, lol. My mother still went on at length about how self-centered and kind of crazy she is, but that's to be expected. Latest evidence: her response to finding out after the fact that I drove home instead of taking the bus was, "Oh, thank God you didn't tell me, otherwise I'd have been worried sick!" BECAUSE I DROVE MY CAR. Which, incidentally, I do pretty often, and have been since the age of 17. And yet, a year and a half later, she is STILL oblivious to the fact that I have a chronic illness, even though I don't even bother to hide it anymore. Still no progress on getting her to declutter her house, despite several pointed remarks about how she needs to clean that shit out.

I expect there to be snow shoveling in my future, as well as hopefully seeing Megan. Tuesday I drive back to DC, with my parents in tow, even though I am kicking them out on Wednesday because Kelly is coming to visit. IDK, I don't think it's worth it to come down for 24 hours, especially since I've just seen them for the last five days and the traffic will be terrible. But hey, maybe I can get them to vacuum the inevitable mess Chelsea will have left for me?

Hi, folks, I am back from Thanksgiving, which was more exhausting than anything else, lol.

OMG I ate sooo much food, and yet still managed to lose weight (having a malfunctioning digestive system does have its perks). But my parents definitely made me work for my food - as soon as I got home on Wednesday night, we started cooking. A cooking post with the full menu and possibly recipes is forthcoming. :) Of course we made FAR more than was necessary, since we only had to feed six people. It was kind of sad when I was setting the table and realized we didn't even need to bring extra chairs into the dining room. We're down two people now that my uncle's gone and my cousin's fiance is now an ex, and my dad's family have their own Thanksgiving so they never come.

Since it was only my two aunts and one cousin who came over, dinner was relatively uneventful, except for my cousin being her usual self and arguing with everything her mother said. I do get the feeling every time we see them that my mother appreciates me a lot more for being such a good daughter and not nearly as difficult as Devi, lol.

Friday was mostly spent shopping. We never used to bother with Black Friday until a few years ago, when we discovered we had a secret weapon. Thanks to my dad's off-kilter sleep pattern, he's usually up at 4am anyway, which gives him an advantage over all the normal people who have to drag their asses out of bed four hours earlier than normal. So for the last few years, we've been sending my dad out to buy whatever we want when the stores open, and then my mom and I go out at a much more leisurely 9 or 10 to do our own shopping. It works out pretty well.

I managed to make a decent dent in my Christmas shopping. I got three people completely done, ideas for a few more, so all that's left are the difficult family members (seriously, I do not know how to shop for 20-something year old boys) and my friends. You may see a request for gift ideas in the near future. :)

On Saturday, we put up my parents' Christmas tree and decorated the house. I decided I'm going to buy a tree - bigger than the one-foot-tall Charlie Brown one I have - for my apartment this year, so I spent some time pilfering ornaments from my parents. It's not like they can't spare a few. I think they've collected enough over the years to decorate three trees, lol. I suggested to my mom that she could probably do a whole tree just with ornaments from places we've gone on vacation.

We had a big project on our hands for Saturday night. My dad's Black Friday goal for this year was a new refrigerator, and he managed to get the one he wanted, but like the doofus he is, scheduled the delivery for the next day, when we have tons of leftovers in the fridge. They delivered the fridge at 7pm, and so we had to clean out the refrigerator in the kitchen AND the one in the garage, because we were getting rid of the old one and moving the kitchen one down to the garage. And then when the delivery guys left, we had to put everything back in, lol.

Before I left on Sunday, we went out to breakfast with my grandmother, who keeps getting weirder each time I see her. She's narcissistic, paranoid, and a hoarder, and it's only getting worse as she gets older and the senility kicks in. Crazy story of the day: she is convinced that the guy who came in to paint her kitchen stole two of my grandfather's hats. My grandfather has been dead for twenty years, and those hats were probably forty years old, so I don't know why anyone would want them, but she insists "that crook" stole the hats, apparently because he was going to Atlantic City that weekend (IDEK where she comes up with these things). Though my favorite story remains the "Chinese people on the internet" one. :) As we were getting in the car to take me to the bus, my mom said, "Last train leaving Crazytown. All aboard!"

Back from my weekend in New York. Because I was away, I finally broke my posting streak, after 112 days of posting. I did take my laptop with me, but was having too much fun that I couldn't be bothered to update LJ. Ah, well. Guess I can start counting up to another hundred from today. Lots of talking about my trip under the cut!

Quote of the day:

My professor, to the Army Fellows in my class: "Don't they teach you guys not to say bad things about the President and Vice President? They don't cover that in basic training?"

Also, I was talking to my mother today, and I mentioned that I'd been reading Budget Travel magazine and now I want to take a cooking class in Italy. We also talked about work a bit, and then this happened:

Mom: "So, did you pick a class yet?"
Me: "Uh... no."
Mom: "Don't you need to do that?"
Me: "Not right now. It's kind of... early."
Mom: "When's the deadline?"
Me: "Um, I think they pretty much have them all year round. There aren't any deadlines."
Mom: "Well, we [the school my mom works at] have classes all year round, too, but we still have deadlines."
Me: "...Are we talking about the same thing?"
Mom: "I'm talking about your [grad school] class that got canceled. What are you talking about?"
Me: "The cooking class in Italy!"
Mom: "Well, you probably want to wait until you've booked airfare before you choose a class."
Me: "I know! That's why I thought you were so weird. Weren't we just talking about Italy?"
Mom: "Oh. I move quickly. Try to keep up."

*sigh* I should never have introduced her to witty banter.

I've been pretending I'm still on vacation, and wanted to eat something that reminded me of places more tropical, so yesterday I cracked open the Key West Bahama Village Jerk Sauce that I bought and marinated some chicken.

It only rained one morning, on our last day in Key West, so we occupied ourselves by going to a shop called Peppers of Key West, where you could sample lots of their products. Between my parents and me, we managed to come home with the jerk sauce, Key Lime Mustard Sauce, Raspberry Wasabi Mustard, and this Key Lime powder stuff that you mix with cream cheese to make a dip. I swear to God, it's like key lime pie on a bagel. Soooo good. I also liked the Pineapple Coconut Mango Tequila Sauce and I think one of the chutneys, but we tried to restrain ourselves.

Definitely check out their website, but be warned - a lot of this stuff is crazy hot! After we'd gone through about a dozen samples, the lady asked us if we'd like to try some of their hotter sauces. My mother said, mouth burning, "You mean... this wasn't the hot stuff?"

In one of the many gift shops we went in this week, my mom found a book titled, "Quit Your Job and Move to Key West." That's pretty much how I feel right now.

Vacation was AWESOME. I am so unbelievably freckled, it almost looks tan. (Seriously, WTF, parents? I am 3/4 Italian and I still ended up with the Irish freckle gene.) We had great weather, only one rainy morning, even if it was unusually chilly for this time of year and we couldn't really go in the water. I will probably be posting lots and lots about it once I get caught up on RL stuff and my flist (y'all were supposed to be BORING - I'm already 140 posts back looking for where I left off and no end in sight), and once my mother sends me the vacation pictures, which are all on her camera.

Also - and I say this with no hyperbole - best birthday EVER. I think we should do this every year. :) (It's kind of surprising, actually, considering that this confluence of my birthday, St. Patrick's Day, and Spring Break happens every year, that I've never done a trip this time of year.)

Now that I'm home, I feel oddly cut off from the world, possibly because:

1. I actually miss my parents.
2. I spent the week with not only my parents, but with the other guests at the B&B we stayed at, so I've gotten used to never being alone.
3. I can't use my cell phone because my parents somehow ended up packing my phone charger in their suitcase. The battery is not dead yet, but I'm down to one bar, and so I want to use my phone as little as possible since I can't charge it until they mail the charger back to me.

I so don't want to go back to work on Monday...

You know, when I was a kid, my mom and I used to sing "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" every time we went on vacation, even if we were driving. :) (We also used to sing "Carolina on My Mind" when we did our annual trips to North Carolina, but that's neither here nor there.)

Anyway, I'm leaving for a week in Key West (woo woo Spring Break!), and I'm not taking the laptop, so try not to be too interesting or exciting while I'm gone, okay? I have great faith in you, fandom. Don't let me down. Be boring.

And yes, I'll be gone for my birthday, so please don't think I'm ignoring any birthday wishes. I'll see them when I get back. :)

Just letting you all know I haven't forgotten that I owe a bunch of people posts. I'm just very easily distracted, and so lots of other stuff has gotten posted instead. (Also, I've been doing a fair amount of fic-editing - yay feedback group!) But they're still in the back of my mind, and I'll get to them eventually, I promise.

According to my foolproof record-keeping system (i.e. my brain), I owe [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle a post about Obama and [personal profile] urania_calliope a post about spiders from that blogging meme. The truth is, I started the Obama post, but I kind of digressed into a coming-of-age story about hope and cynicism and the influence of politics (what did I say? Easily distracted!!), so I think maybe it needs some editing.

I also owe [personal profile] urania_calliope (again? Oh geez, she's gonna think I'm a slacker) a drabble/ficlet from the timestamp meme forever and a day ago. I kind of want to be disappointed that more people didn't participate in that one, but given that I still haven't written the one request I got, maybe y'all just know me too well.

Anyway, I hope all the other Americans had a nice Memorial Day. I had a pretty busy weekend. Left work early on Friday so I could drive to my parents' house to join a barbecue already in progress. Spent Saturday at a car show, where my dad won a trophy and I got one of those freaky sunburns that's only on one arm and I have a weird shirt line.

The highlight of the weekend was Sunday, when my parents and I went to another barbecue, where it was really, really windy. My mom had a paper plate with tartar sauce on it (they had the BEST crabcakes there), and along came a gust of wind and splat! Plate hit my dad square in the chest. Huge tartar sauce stain on his shirt.

Dad: The only way it would've been better is if it had hit me in the face.
Mom: You know, I'm finally feeling closure after that wedding cake incident.
Dad: What wedding cake incident?
Mom: OUR wedding. You smooshed the cake in my face.
Dad: You really need to let that go.

Fortunately, when we got home, my mother managed to work her magic with Shout spray cleaner, which prompted her to say, "We should reenact the whole thing and film it, and send it to Shout to use as a commercial. This stuff really works!"

We also did some trip planning - we're going to San Francisco and the Napa Valley in July, if anyone has travel tips.

Funny how your flist can become completely overwhelming and totally unmanageable when left unattended for two weeks. I don't think I'll ever recover.

I did have a fabulous trip, though. I am, of course, now completely smitten with an Irish musician named Owen. Other than that, I think the highlight of the trip was the castle ruins (particularly Rock of Cashel and Cahir). I like those kinds of castles much better than the renovated, redecorated ones... it became a running joke with my travel companions, "Oh, this place has furniture. Sorry, you won't like it." We also saw the Cliffs of Moher, Dingle, Dungarvan, Kinsale, Waterford crystal factory, Kilkenney, and a bunch of stuff in Dublin that I'd already seen the first time I went there, but it was new for everyone else.

I also enjoyed the cows and sheep, of which we saw many. In fact, our next door neighbors were cows. It's kinda weird how they all stare at you when you walk past. It's like the Borg or something.

The house we stayed in was beautiful, in An Rinn, outside of Dungarvan, right on a cliff overlooking the sea, surrounded by fields and pastures. The driving was... well, never a dull moment. We rented a Jaguar totally by accident (we reserved a Toyota, but our 50 bamillion suitcases couldn't fit in those midget cars Europeans drive, so we needed a bigger one), and my mom loved driving it. My aunt... not so much, lol. Fortunately, we hardly hit any pedestrians, and the car was returned not too worse for wear. Plus, we had Irish men offering to pump our gas for us in exchange for the chance to sit in the Jag, lol.

It took about a week to really get into the Irish pub scene, but once we did, we had a lot of fun. Spent two nights at a bar in Dungarvan, which is where I met the aforementioned Owen, as well as a couple pubs in Dublin with good Irish music. We managed to make friends and the Irish were all too willing to buy us drinks (yet I still managed to escape without drinking any Guinness).

There were a few minor bumps (we lost our camera, some stress over incompatible travel companions), but overall, we had a brilliant time, and I'd so totally go back.

Anyway, once I've got all the post-vacation RL things sorted out, I'll start slowly but surely plowing through the "Closure" reviews (which, again, holy crap) and post up the last couple chapters. I think I might have won some awards? I have to check my email...
