Yes, TVD is The Vampire Diaries. And I fully recommend watching it, with the important caveat that the first half-dozen or so episodes SUCK MIGHTILY. You kind of just have to force your way through it, but once it picks up, it NEVER STOPS.
I kind of think Buffy comparisons do it a disservice, but the draw is similar - I'm not really interested in vampires as a genre (I have zero patience for Twilight or True Blood or any of the other vampire shows out there). I need more depth, shows that challenge the genre somehow. TVD feels pretty shallow early on, but once it settles in, it develops the kind of compelling characters that Buffy had.
